I have tried every option I can find online to eliminate this error message from our Church's computer (it appears under Windows Updates, says it will update, then never does.  It just stays as an error).

Again, please DO NOT email me solutions you find on line.  My guess is I've tried 15+ different 'solutions' that were supposed to solve the problem and NONE of them have.  What I need is a solution from someone who actually tried what they found and it actually worked.   🙂

The error is:  0x80070103

Thanks.

Hi @dvdrttr14,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Error code 0x80070103 can occur in Windows Update when the system tries to install a driver that is either already installed or the driver has a compatibility issue with your version of Windows. This error can be particularly stubborn, especially if the system keeps trying to install an inappropriate driver update. Here’s a step-by-step approach to resolve this error based on practices that have worked for others:

Hide the Problematic Update:

  • Go to Control Panel and select 'System and Security'.
  • Click on 'Windows Update', then 'Check for updates'.
  • When the update causing the error appears, right-click on it and choose 'Hide update'. This should prevent Windows from attempting to reinstall the problematic update.

Use the Device Manager to Update Drivers Manually:

  • Open Device Manager by typing "Device Manager" in the search box on the taskbar and selecting it from the results.
  • Look for any devices with a yellow exclamation mark next to them, which indicates a problem. Right-click on the device and select 'Update driver'.
  • Choose 'Search automatically for updated driver software'. If that doesn’t work, try 'Browse my computer for driver software' and select a driver that you have downloaded from the manufacturer’s website.

Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  • Select 'Windows Update' and then 'Run the troubleshooter'. Follow the on-screen instructions to let the troubleshooter diagnose and resolve issues.

Check HP Website for Drivers:

  • Sometimes, the latest drivers available through Windows Update might not be the best ones for your hardware. Visit the manufacturer's website for any hardware that you suspect might be causing the issue and download the drivers directly.

Perform a System Restore:

  • If the issue started recently, you can use System Restore to go back to a point before the problem began. Type "Create a restore point" in the search box on the taskbar, select it, go to the 'System Protection' tab, and click 'System Restore'. Choose a restore point before you began experiencing the update error.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for getting back to me.  Unfortunately, this did not resolve the issue.  I remoted into the Secretary's computer, went to Windows Update, and tried a retry first.  It returned the same error it has been returning.

I  right clicked on the error and there wasn't an option to hide the update.  The only option when I right clicked was 'select all,' but that didn't do anything either.

So, unless I misunderstood your instructions, that didn't work and the errors still display.

Thanks.

Thanks for your help.  I'll stop by the Church and follow your suggestions to see if this can be resolved.  It isn't critical ... just a nuisance.  🙂
