I am having a hard time with my new MFP M281cdw and Windows 10 and having the Printing Shortcuts remember my settings.
I print only PDF's, Microsoft Word 2016 documents and sometimes direct pages from the web. So, I would like to Paper Source to be set to AUTO SELECT. When I am about to Print something (PDF file), it defaults to Genereal Everyday Printing and Tray 1. Well, I change it to AUTO SELECT (for paper source) and it holds this setting for until I print and close the PDF. Upon re-opening the same file or another PDF document, it again defaults to Tray 1 in my General Everyday Printing.
If I try to change to FACTORY DEFAULTS, it does everything okay until again, I close the PDF document. Open re-opening it again or choosing another PDF file to print, the "default" Printing Shortcut is no longer FACTORY DEFAULT, but Geeneral Everyday Printing, which again has Tray 1 as the Paper Source.
How can I globally set that any printing from any program will have it default to AUTO SELECT as the Paper Source and remember that setting.
I can't figure it out, and need help. For the record, I am using the latest Windows 10 x64 build, Adobe Acrobat Reader 2018 and latest HP Software & driver for my MFP M281

Thank you for posting on HP Forums,
Flower_Bud is at your service.
As I understand, you're in need of support,
I'd like to thank you for the detailed description of your concern, as you have ensured I don't have to ask any more questions, that said,
There are two ways to Save preferred print settings:
Create a custom shortcut:
If your print driver has a Printing Shortcut tab, save commonly used settings in a custom shortcut.
-
In the print settings window, click the Printing Shortcut tab, then click one of the shortcut names in the list.
-
Change any settings using the menus in the right side of the window.
A User Specified Print Settings shortcut displays at the bottom of the shortcuts list.

-
Click the shortcut to highlight it, then click Save As to rename it.
Set defaults for all print jobs:
Access the settings window in Devices and Printers to select settings that apply to all your print jobs.
-
Search Windows for 'printers', then click Devices and Printers in the search results.
-
Right-click the icon for your printer, then click Printer properties.

-
Click the Advanced tab, then click Printing Defaults.

-
Change any settings you want as defaults in the Printing Defaults window, then click OK.
Hope this helps,
Keep me posted,
Cheers!
