Is there a way to stop auto updates from my HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M28-M31 without deleting it from my computer and starting over? I made the mistake of saying yes to auto updates. Too many times when I start up my computer, HP goes looking for updates and it bogs down my computer. I can't do anything until I go to the task manager and stop HP from looking for updates.

Hi @lizp7743015
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To stop automatic updates for your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28-M31 without uninstalling the printer, you can follow these steps:
1. Disable Automatic Updates in HP Software
- Open the HP Smart app or any other HP software you have installed.
- Look for settings or preferences related to updates. There should be an option to disable automatic updates.
2. Disable HP Background Services
You can disable the HP update service through the Windows Services menu:
- Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type services.msc and press Enter.
- In the Services window, scroll down to find HP Service or HP Update.
- Right-click on it and select Properties.
- Change the Startup type to Disabled.
- Click Stop to stop the service if it’s currently running, then click OK.
3. Adjust HP Software Settings
- Check the settings in the HP software for any options to prevent the software from launching at startup:
- Open the HP Software or HP Smart application.
- Look for a Settings or Preferences menu.
- Disable any options related to automatic updates or startup behavior.
4. Disable HP Update from Startup
You can prevent HP software from starting automatically when your computer boots up:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Go to the Startup tab.
- Look for any HP-related entries.
- Right-click on them and select Disable.
5. Check Windows Update Settings
- Sometimes, the HP printer software may be set to check for updates through Windows Update. You can manage Windows Update settings through:
- Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced options.
6. Uninstall HP Update (Optional)
If the above methods don’t work, you might consider uninstalling the HP Update software without removing the printer driver:
- Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Look for HP Update or similar and uninstall it.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
