In my experience, if you want compatibility with current generation routers you need a printer that supports at least 802.11ac. Models that only support B/G/N and A standards will struggle to communicate reliably. There are a couple of work arounds:
1. If your router supports it, restrict the MAC address of the printer to only connect to the 2.4Ghz channel.
2. If your router does not support above, then create a unique SSID for the 2.4Ghz channel and only allow the printer to connect to the 2.4Ghz SSID. If you look at the specs for a printer, it will list what options it supports.
