How do I add 'HP Smart Print' as a device in the printers and scanners list on my Windows 10 PC, so that Smart Print appears as a printer in applications such as MS Word and Powerpoint?
I want to be able to print directly from these apps and not have to create a PDF file, switch to HP Smart App and then print the PDF from there.
Thanks,
Ian

Hi @IanD39
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To add HP Smart Print as a printer in the Printers & Scanners list on your Windows 10 PC, follow these steps to ensure it appears as a printer you can select directly in applications like Microsoft Word or PowerPoint:
1. Install HP Smart App (if not already installed)
If you haven’t already, install the HP Smart app from the Microsoft Store on your Windows 10 PC:
- Open the Microsoft Store on your computer.
- Search for HP Smart and install the app.
The HP Smart app allows you to manage your printer and can also enable printing via the app's interface. However, for direct printing in apps like Word or PowerPoint, you'll need to ensure your printer is properly set up as a printer in your PC’s settings.
2. Make Sure Your Printer Is Connected to the Same Network
Ensure your HP printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Windows 10 PC. If you're using a Wi-Fi-connected HP printer, this is crucial for ensuring the printer can communicate with your PC.
- For wireless printers: On the printer's display panel, check the Wi-Fi settings and confirm it's connected to your home network.
- For USB printers: Ensure the printer is properly connected via USB cable.
3. Add Your HP Printer to Windows 10
Follow these steps to add the HP Smart printer to your Printers & Scanners list:
- Open the Start Menu and go to Settings (click the gear icon).
- Click Devices.
- On the left side, select Printers & Scanners.
- Click Add a Printer or Scanner at the top.
- Windows will automatically search for available printers. Wait for it to find your HP Smart printer.
- When you see your HP printer listed, click on it and then click Add device.
- If your printer doesn't appear, click on The printer that I want isn't listed, and then follow the on-screen instructions to manually add your printer (e.g., by IP address).
4. Set HP Smart Printer as Default Printer
If you want HP Smart Print to be the default printer for all your applications, you can set it as the default printer:
- Go back to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
- Under Printers & Scanners, find your HP Smart Printer in the list.
- Click on the printer and select Manage.
- Click Set as Default.
5. Ensure HP Smart Printer Appears in MS Word and PowerPoint
After adding the printer, it should now appear in the Printers list when you print from applications like Word and PowerPoint. Here’s how to print directly:
- Open MS Word or PowerPoint.
- Go to File > Print.
- In the Printer drop-down list, select your HP Smart printer.
- Click Print.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Rachel571,
Thank you for the reply. The problem I have is that at step 3.5 where you say to wait for Windows to find HP Smart Printer, it never does.
I have my physical HP printer (Officejet 4630) is listed in the Windows printers and scanners, but not 'HP Smart Printer' as it used to be.
When I had 'HP Smart Printer' listed in Windows printers, I could select HP Smart Printer from within MS Word (etc) and when I clicked print it would open the HP Smart Printing app and my printing worked.
Now, with only the physical Officejet 4630 listed in Windows/MS Word, it prints the first document that I send, but doesn't clear this document from the printer spool and therefore doesn't let me print any further documents (I've tried cancelling the stuck/printed document in the spool, but this does nothing). This is why I would like to get back to having HP Smart Printer in Windows/MS Word.
Regards,
Ian
