Hello how do I change the Wi-fi Direct PIN on my HP Envy Photo 6220 printer?

When I first got the printer the pin was 12345678 and it eventually changed to another PIN by itself. Does it normally do this? If so is the PIN likely to change again?

However I would prefer to set my own PIN. How do I do this?

I have followed advice on here by going to http://192.168.223.1 but it keeps asking for a Username and Password. Each time I enter my same details for the HP Account/Community Account, including either my Username and/or email address and password but it won't accept them.

Hi @Koalabear1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand you have trouble with the Wi-Fi direct PIN and the EWS page; you are not able to sign in with the current credentials

About the Wi-Fi Direct PIN

What you’re seeing is actually expected behavior.

  • The Wi-Fi Direct PIN/password is automatically generated by the printer
  • It can change periodically for security reasons
  • Unfortunately, there isn’t an option to manually set or customize your own PIN on this model

So yes, what you experienced (it changing from the default 12345678) is normal, and it may change again over time.

About accessing the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

The screen you’re seeing, asking for a username and password, is not your HP account login, so those details won’t work there.

To get the correct login details:

Print a Network/Information Page

  • From the printer, print a Network Configuration Page or Wi-Fi Direct Information page
  • This page will include:
    • The Wi-Fi Direct password/PIN
    • The Embedded Web Server (EWS) username/password (if required)

You can then use those credentials to log in via your phone or browser.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello, many thanks for your helpful reply. I didn't know the Wi-fi Direct PIN on my printer couldn't be changed. but that may be a good thing. However if it changes again for security how can I find out what the new PIN is? Last time I printed out a Wi-fi instruction page that showed the PIN code on the print-out in brackets but I don't really want to print it out every time to save ink. On the printer display screen when I tap the 'Wi-fi Direct' icon and it takes me into Wi-fi Direct it shows the PIN in asterisks, so I  can't see it. Is there a way of showing the PIN on the screen the next time it changes so I can write it down?

Thanks also for the information on the EWS page. But I really only want to login to change the Wi-fi Direct PIN but as you say if it can't be changed on my make of printer there is no point logging in for now.

Hi @Koalabear1,

You’re absolutely right to check on this. On your printer, the Wi-Fi Direct PIN cannot be manually changed, and it is automatically generated by the printer for security purposes. It may change over time, and that behavior is normal.

How to find the PIN (when it changes)

On this model, there are only two ways to view the actual PIN:

  1. Print the Wi-Fi Direct / Network Information page
    • This is the only way to see the full PIN clearly
  2. From the printer display
    • As you noticed, it will only show the PIN as asterisks (****)
    • For security reasons, the full PIN is not revealed on the screen

Important note

  • There is no option to display the full PIN on the screen
  • There is also no option to manually set or edit the PIN
  • The Embedded Web Server (EWS) will not allow changing the PIN either on this model

Recommendation

If you want to avoid printing frequently:

  • You can print the info page once when needed, and note the PIN down
  • The PIN does not change very often unless settings are reset or reconfigured

I understand it would be more convenient to view it directly on screen, but this is how the feature is designed for security.

If you need help with anything else, feel free to reach out

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
