My new hp9125e scans everything as if it is a photo - how can I change the default to documents rather than photos, and increase the resolution above 300 dpi so that I don’t have to manually do it each time I scan?

Hi @buyer21,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To change the default scan settings on your HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e All-in-One Printer so that it defaults to documents instead of photos and increases the resolution above 300 dpi, follow these steps.
On the Printer Control Panel:
Access Scan Settings:
- Tap the Home button on the printer display.
- Navigate to the Scan or Setup menu and select Scan Settings.
Set Document as Default:
- Look for an option like Default Scan Settings or Scan Preferences.
- Select File Type or Scan Mode and choose Document as the default mode instead of Photo.
Adjust Resolution:
- Locate the Resolution option and set it to a higher DPI (e.g., 600 DPI or higher as per your preference).
Save Changes:
- After making adjustments, confirm and save the settings.
Using HP Smart App (Windows or Mac):
Open the HP Smart App:
- Download and install the HP Smart app if not already installed.
- Connect your printer to the app.
Go to Scan Settings:
- Click on Scan from the app dashboard.
- In the scanning window, look for Settings or Advanced Settings.
Set Document as Default:
- Under Scan Type or Source, select Document instead of Photo.
- Adjust other preferences like color (e.g., Black & White, Grayscale, etc.).
Increase Resolution:
- Set the Resolution to your desired DPI (e.g., 600 DPI or higher).
Save Preferences:
- Look for an option to Save as Default Settings or Apply Changes to make these settings persistent.

Using HP Embedded Web Server (EWS):
Access EWS:
- Open a web browser and type your printer's IP address into the address bar. You can find the IP address on the printer's network settings.
Log in to the EWS:
- Log in as an administrator if prompted (default credentials are often listed in the user manual).
Navigate to Scan Settings:
- Go to the Scan or Digital Filing tab.
- Locate Default Scan Settings.
Set Preferences:
- Change the mode to Document.
- Increase the default resolution.
Save Changes:
- Apply the changes and restart the printer if necessary.
Note:
If none of the above steps work as intended or you face difficulties saving default settings, ensure that your printer firmware and HP Smart app are updated to the latest version.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
