My HP Desk Jet series 2131 will not scan. The Printer works however it seems the scan system does not have a software driver to scan. I am completely at a loss on how to do this without it costing me my pension.

Hi @Sivonj,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP DeskJet 2131 can print but will not scan because the scanning software or driver is missing. Let’s go through a few steps to get scanning working again without any cost.

Understand how scanning works on this model
The DeskJet 2131 does not scan by itself and does not have a screen or network features.
Scanning only works through software installed on the computer.

Check if basic scan software is already installed
On your computer, search for Windows Scan, HP Scan, or HP Printer Assistant.
If none of these open or detect the scanner, the scan driver is not installed.

Download the correct free HP driver
Open a web browser and go to HP’s official driver download page.
Search for HP DeskJet 2131 and select your operating system exactly.
Download the Full Feature Software and Drivers (this includes scanning).

Install the software with the printer connected by USB
Turn the printer on and connect it to the computer using a USB cable.
Run the downloaded installer and follow the on-screen steps until installation completes.

Restart the computer after installation
Once the software finishes installing, restart the computer.
This ensures the scanner driver loads correctly.

Test scanning using HP software
After restart, open HP Printer Assistant or HP Scan from the Start menu.
Place a document on the scanner glass and try a basic scan.

Alternative built-in Windows scan option
If HP Scan does not open, open the Windows Scan app (free from Microsoft Store).
Select the HP DeskJet 2131 and try scanning from there.

Confirm the USB connection
This printer must remain connected by USB for scanning.
It will not scan over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

I hope this helps.
