@thosborne, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP printer is printing pages with a black background instead of white, it’s likely due to a software or driver setting, or the way the document is formatted. Here are some steps to help you fix this and save ink:

Check the Document Background

  • If you're printing from a PDF, Word, or web page, make sure the background isn’t set to black.
  • In Microsoft Word:
    • Go to Design > Page Color and set it to White or No Color.
  • In Adobe Reader:
    • Go to Edit > Preferences > Accessibility
    • Check Replace Document Colors and set Page Background to white.

Disable Background Printing (Windows)

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers
  • Right-click your HP printer > Printing Preferences
  • Look for any setting like "Print Background Colors and Images" and disable it.

Use HP Smart App or HP Print Settings

Update or Reinstall Printer Driver

  • Visit HP Software and Driver Downloads
  • Enter your printer model and download the latest Full Feature Software and Drivers.
  • Reinstalling can reset any misconfigured settings.

Test Print

Try printing a simple Notepad file or a blank Word document to confirm the background is white. If it prints correctly, the issue is likely with the original document formatting.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
