I tried to print an envelope and the device advised me that I do not have the software to complete the command.

Sure - could be true -

True >> The mystery "device" must have some kind application that supports basic print function and a way to print a standard file type formats.

Device must have a way to translate the envelope size for the printer and the app / software settings.

The software or application you use depends on which Operating System / version you are using on "device" and the available tools, apps, and / or software on that platform.

What?

Windows provides the most versatility.

Word (part of Office), at least supports printing envelopes in Windows and possibly other platforms where Word is available:  Word > Mailings > Envelopes

NOTE:  Word has rules about envelope margins that are not necessarily the same as the margins that the printer can handle.  This means even if the printer supports smaller paper sizes, Word > Mailings > Envelopes might balk at the address placement requirements for tiny envelopes.

HP Smart - Windows / Mobile (printer on network) can at least print an envelope shaped document if you have a PDF document with the return and recipient addresses.  The address placement is not ideal - the app can do the job.
