HP PhotoSmart 6520
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

I am trying to setup my HP PhotoSmart 6520 on a new Mac laptop but the HP Smart software can't find it. I have a Windows 10 PC using the same wireless network which can print to it just fine. My MacBook is connected to the same wireless network but it can't find it. Neither do I seem to be able to manually configure the printer.

Do I have to get past the wizard before I can do anything? What happens when the wizard gets it wrong? How do I manually add my new printer and specify its IP address when the wizard is too dumb to find it?

I can also ping the printer's IP address from the Mac.

I think I figured out what my problem was: I decided to use HP software to try and setup my printer!!

I went to System Preferences > Printers and Add Printer, and there was "Photosmart 6520 series [6316F4]" printer (with Kind "Bonjour Multifunt") waiting for me to add, so I did, and it worked!

I then tried to see if I could use the scanner part of the so-called "HP Smart" software. Nope. No can do. Log into my account, etc, etc, and then all I get is: "Scanning is currently unavailable. Please select Home to check that your printer is connected and active, return here to scan. Alternative, you can use Import or Camera features above."

So I then start "Image Capture" (the built-in Mac software) and.... it just works!

Why has HP software always been so horrible? I would never buy another HP printer again given this experience. You seriously need to focus on software that actually works, not software that has different coloured pretty buttons and layout every six months (as seems to be the case). Stop tinkering with form and start worrying about function, for the love of god, Please!!!!!
