I wish to delete my old printer, which has died, from HP Smart. I followed the on screen instructions and clicked on 'remove printer', I was then shown a page asking me to add a printer.
My Home Screen still shows the old printer......Please help! It does appear to be a long term issue that quite a few people have had.

Welcome to the HP User Community.
HP has developed a tendency to call everything "Smart" - the exception (so far) is the Instant Ink subscription plan; who knows - maybe "Instant" will be renamed "Smart"...
I believe you want to remove your printer from the following
- HP Smart application (Hide Printer). This action removes the printer from the HP app.
- HP Smart / HP Connected Account >(Remove Printer)
- HP Dashboard (HP Account) >(Remove Device)
Example - Dashboard
HP_Account_Dashboard_4
The HP Smart application controls which printers are available to HP Smart app scan and print.
The HP Smart / Connected account controls which printers are attached to the printer email address.
The HP Account Dashboard controls which devices are listed in your registered device list.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
My printers are listed on the HP Smart web site, I logged into the HP Account website and there were no printers listed at all!!
I've taken the opportunity to register my new printer there but, sadly, it has not helped remove the printer from HP Smart. I suspect that the two websites have no links.
Just to recap I did follow the printer options below the ENVY 5640 printer and selected 'remove printer'... it didn't. The old printer is disconnected from the internet and will remain so as it has boldly gone, it's pushing up the daisies, its gone to meet it's maker (no not HP), you get my drift.

Frankly, I don't know - I've varying success with any / all of it over time.
I don't have any dead printers to test. That is both good or bad, depending on how you look at it...
You cannot perform a factory reset on a dead printer - and the instructions do mention that is one way to yank the printer out of the application. Meh.
It might work to uninstall the HP Smart App from the devices (MacOS / phone(s))
Restart everything
Check again
If the unwanted printer is finally gone,
Install the HP Smart app on one device and check again
