@Brianb1939, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

To scan documents using your HP ENVY 6420e printer, follow these steps:

Prepare the Document:

  • Place the document you want to scan on the scanner glass or into the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), if available and preferred.

Open Scanner Software:

  • If you are using Windows, open the HP Printer Assistant from your computer by searching for your printer name.
  • On macOS, open the HP Smart app.

Select Scan Options:

  • In the HP Printer Assistant, navigate to the "Scan" section and select "Scan a Document or Photo."
  • For the HP Smart app, choose "Scan" from the home screen.

Choose Your Settings:

  • Choose your scan preferences, such as scan type, resolution, and destination (whether to save to your computer, send via email, etc.).
  • For two-sided documents, make sure to select options that accommodate this feature if your printer supports them.

Perform the Scan:

  • Click "Scan" or "Start Scan" to begin the scanning process.
  • Follow any on-screen prompts to complete the scan.

Save the Scanned Document:

  • Once the scan is completed, you can save the document to your computer or send it to an email, depending on the selected options
