I need to print envelopes measuring 3 5/8" x 6 1/2".  How do I set the printer options.  I do not see these exact measurements in the list of envelopes I can select.  Does this mean that this printer cannot print this size envelope?

What the printer can do:

HP Officejet 5746 e-All-in-One Printer (F8B09A) Specifications

and

Media Sizes Custom (imperial)3.85 x 8.5 to 5 x 14 in
Media Sizes Custom (metric)97.79 x 215 to 127 x 355 mm
Media TypesPaper (plain, inkjet, photo), envelopes, transparencies, labels, cards, the HP premium media, iron-on transfers, borderless media

The printer supports Custom Paper Sizes.

Not clearly indicated for this model, but perhaps supported Index Card in 3x5 inches.

The problem is not "just" the paper size - it is perhaps the paper size combined with the paper type.

Other factors include the method you are using to create and print the envelopes.

For example,

If you use Word > Mailings > Envelopes

Even if you correctly modify / set the Printer Display panel paper size / type to "Custom"

Even if you correctly set the Embedded Web Server (EWS) Preferences - Tray and Paper to "Custom",

Even if you set a custom size for that envelope,

Then

When / If the dimensions are "too small" for the envelope,

The software will issue a warning and then suggest a printable size.

Example -  Word > Mailings > Envelopes - Custom Envelope - Size not accepted

Rabbits_and_Chickens_Test_Envelope_Custom_1Rabbits_and_Chickens_Test_Envelope_Custom_1

What to do?

Not sure anything will work for this.

Much depends on whether you can convince the printer that what you want to do is something the printer "will" do.

For example,

It Might be necessary to create your Custom Paper Size form ahead of time.

HP Document:

HP Printers - Creating Custom Paper Sizes

Assuming that works AND that the paper size is actually something the printer supports (printer hardware),

That might be all you need in terms of what you are already doing.

It depends (again) on the method combined with the settings.

Try it...

What if?

No Joy...

Try / Consider

Piece together the parts of what you need from the following suggestions...

Load the paper / envelopes (stack of five) according to the instructions in the  User Guide

Page 13

Set the paper size / type on the Printer Display panel to Custom (if available, likely the last entry in list.)

Set / Verify the Tray and Paper settings in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) - set paper size to "Custom" as available.

The Basics - Create Manual Envelope document

Create a Word document in the Page Size of your envelope > 6/12 " wide by 3 5/8 " height

Set the margins to "Narrow"  (1/2 inch on each side)

OR

Try setting Margins to Custom

Top and Bottom = .14 inches

Left / Right = .65 inches

Create a couple of Text Boxes > Enter the Return Address in one and the Destination Address in the other.

Example

Manual_A9_Envelope_Text_Box_Insert_1Manual_A9_Envelope_Text_Box_Insert_1

Save the document

In File > Print

Open Printer Properties

Set the paper type (Media) to either Plain Paper or possibly Index card (as available)

Select your Custom paper size in Page Size list (likely last in list)

Exit Printer Properties

and Print

OR

If you had not yet done so, create your Custom paper size form

File > Print > Printer Properties

Tab Paper / Quality

Under Paper Size > Custom > New

Enter a name for your custom template

Enter the dimensions

Click OK to save the form

Exit Printer Properties

Wait three seconds

Go back into Printer Properties

Set the paper size / paper type

Click OK to save settings and exit Printer Properties again

and Print

References / Resources

Paper already loaded?

Open tray – Wait a few seconds – Close tray - Update information - Continue

Done that?  Stuck?
