Greetings,

The Knowledge Base document says:

  1. Unplug the USB cord
  2. Turn on the printer

If the USB is disconnected, why does the printer have to be turned on? How does it receive instructions from the computer?

It doesn't have a wireless connection.

Thanks,

Shane.

Removing software is best done without the printer actually being connected.

In fact, during certain actions, it is required that the printer software not be actively trying to connect or engaged with the printer hardware in any way.

If you really do not want to - or cannot - switch on the printer.

Don't do so.

How-to Document:

HP Printers - Uninstalling the Printer Software (Windows)

For example,

Excerpted:

Step 2: Remove the printer from the devices list

To complete the uninstall, remove the printer and any Windows print drivers from the Windows Devices and Printers list.
  1. Make sure the printer is turned on and in a ready state.
  2. If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  3. In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.
  4. Click Devices and Printers, right-click the icon for your printer

, and then click Remove Device or Uninstall device.
If you do not see your printer in the list, expand the Printers section.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the printer removal.
If multiple icons exist for your printer, remove them all.

What about when "installing" printer software?

What about that USB cable?

Printer should be on and ready - USB cable should be disconnected.

When you are installing the printer software with the intention of using a USB cable between the printer and the computer, that cable must be disconnected until such time that the installation asks that the cable be (re)connected.
