I am trying to install the drivers for my MacBook Pro with OS Sierra Ver 10.12.2. I can print to the printer with all my other devices (tablet & phones), but when I try to add this printer (connected wirelessly to my network) to my MacBook Pro, it does not find it. When I go into settings, and add a printer, telling the computer under the IP tab to use AirPrint or HP Jetdirect - Socket, I get an error that it cannot connect to the printer. I've tried to tell it to continue, but when I attempt printing a test page, it says it cannot communicate with the printer. When I go to the default tab, there is nothing listed either. I've entered the printers name, but it dosen't even seem to search for a the printer.

When I searched in the support pages, they did list a hyperlink for http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03967522 but this link gives an error page not found.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for replying. I appreciate you taking your valuable time to troubleshoot.

I suggest you to try installing the Mac OS inbuilt drivers because there are no full-featured drivers for Mac Sierra.

  • Please download the Mac inbuilt drivers from this link: http://hp.care/2flF56z
  • From System Preferences, click on Print & Scan.
  • Click the Plus sign.
  • Select the listed HP Officejet Pro 8500.
  • Click the drop-down menu next to Use or Print Using and click on Select Printer Software.
  • Select the HP Officejet Pro 8500 from the list.
  • Click OK to confirm your selection and add the printer, then try printing using the configured print queue.

Hope the above steps help. Let me know. Thanks again! 🙂

Hello, @jlwhiteiii - Hope you are well 🙂

Welcome to the HP Support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips.

I understand you are facing issues while installing Officejet 8500 on MAC Sierra. I will do my best to assist you with this issue 🙂

I would suggest you uninstall and reinstall the drivers first. Follow the steps below:

  • Click the Apple menu icon, and then click “System Preferences”.
  • Click “Printers and Scanner” / “Print and Scan” or “Print and Fax”.
  • Right-click the blank space in the Printers list, and then click “Reset printing system”.
  • Click “Reset” in the confirmation window.
  • Enter an administrator username and password, and then click “OK”.
  • Wait until the printing system is reset and no devices show in the Printers list
  • Restart your computer and then go back to System preferences – Printers and scanners.
  • Click the “Add button” (+).
  • Find, and then select the name of your printer from the printer list, and then click “Add” to add your printer.
  • Click “Print Using...”, and then select the name of your printer (By default “Airprint” would be selected)

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.

Cheers 🙂

Followed your direction (did not know there was a printer reset-thank you), but when I restarted and click on the + sign, no printers showed up.. if I go to the IP tab and add the printers name, use AirPrint protocol, and then Use, select software, I can see the long list of printers using AirPrint, and if I select mine, I still get an error message Unable to verify your printer on your network. Would you still like to create this printer? If I select yes, it loads it into the list of printers, but I still cannot print, and in the print que, I cannot see supply levels, and in the utilities I cannot connect to the device.

Hello @jlwhiteiii,

Appreciate your efforts 🙂

Let's try a network power drain to assign a new IP address for your printer that should fix the issue. Follow the steps below:

•                     Turn off all the devices connected on your network including the PC, Smartphones, printer, modem (if present) and router. Make sure all the devices in the network are turned off / unplugged.

•                     Now turn on the modem if present. Wait till all the lights are steady and idle.

•                     Then turn on the router. Again wait for a couple of minutes so that the lights are all steady.

•                     Then turn on the printer and other devices.

Once done, now follow the steps in my above message to add the printer. Ideally, it should find the printer when you click the "+" icon.

Those steps should do the trick, let me know the outcome!

Cheers 🙂

DVortex, still didn't do the job. Went into my router and gave the printer a static ip address, and reloaded the printer on all my mobile devices, and life is good.  Computer saw the printer right away, and everything works like a charm. Really love this printer. Thanks for your assitance.
