My printer stopped functioning after a recent firmware upgrade. I'm using 3rd party toners and refuse to replace them with HP ones. How do I downgrade my printer's firmware?

Hi @bj_nyc,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your concern about the recent firmware update and the use of third-party cartridges. HP does not support downgrading printer firmware. Firmware updates are designed to improve security, reliability, and performance. Once installed, the printer cannot revert to an earlier version.

Recent firmware updates may include security enhancements that prevent the use of non-HP cartridges. This is intended to protect your printer from counterfeit or incompatible supplies that could damage the device.

Recommended Steps

  1. Use Original HP Supplies
HP printers are optimized for genuine HP cartridges. Using HP cartridges ensures full functionality and avoids compatibility issues.

  2. Disable Automatic Updates (Optional)
If you prefer to manage updates manually:
    • On the printer control panel, go to
Setup → Printer Maintenance → Update Printer → Printer Update Options.
    • Select Do Not Check or Notify Before Updating.

  3. Check for Latest Firmware
If you suspect the update caused issues, confirm you have the latest firmware:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

My printer was functioning perfectly fine with its 3rd party toners. It stopped working after the firmware upgrade. I never asked for HP's protection against "counterfeit or incompatible supplies". The true motivation behind this update is corporate greed. If the US had meaningful consumer protections, this would be illegal. Here is what I will do: I will voice my discontent across my social network. I will give away my HP printer and purchase one by a different brand. And I will steer clear of HP products of any kind in the future.

HI @bj_nyc,

I truly understand how upsetting this experience has been, especially since your printer was working perfectly fine before the firmware update. I’m really sorry for the frustration this has caused, and I appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns so clearly.

We never want our customers to feel forced into a situation or feel unheard. Firmware updates are intended to improve reliability, security, and overall performance, but I understand that in your case, the outcome has been the opposite, and that’s understandably disappointing.

If you’re open to it, I’d like to see if there’s any assistance we can still explore for your specific printer. Please share the printer serial number in a private message, and we’ll review the details and check what options, if any, may be available for your region and model.

Thank you for being honest about your experience. Your feedback is important, and it will be shared with the appropriate teams. I’m sorry again for the frustration this has caused, and I appreciate your time.

Take care and have an amazing day!

To conclude: HP's firmware upgrade not only disabled 3rd party cartridges but also removed the option of a firmware downgrade. I have wasted hours of my time trying to fix my HP printer, to no avail. HP has lost a customer. I'll be looking elsewhere for all my future hardware needs.

Hi @bj_nyc,

I’m really sorry to hear about your experience, and I sincerely understand how frustrating this situation has been. We truly regret the time and effort you’ve had to spend trying to resolve this.

HP firmware updates are designed to improve security, reliability, and protect the printing system. As part of these updates, dynamic security may be enforced, which can restrict the use of cartridges that do not contain an HP chip or circuitry. For security and stability reasons, HP does not support firmware downgrades, and once a newer firmware is installed, reverting to an earlier version is not possible.

I understand this may not align with your expectations, and I respect your decision. From our side

Take care and have an amazing day!
