I have a HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 and am unable to print with automatic duplexing. It worked once, and after that I haven't been able to get it to work again. The printer does have automatic duplexing capabilities. I also don't know if this is important, but my computer system says "Windows 10 Home". Here is what I have tried:
- In Windows 10 settings, enabling "print on both sides>flip on long edge" in printer preferences after selecting the printer
- With the above setting on, printing directly from the HP Smart App and also selecting "duplex printing>print on both sides>flip on long edge when printing"
- With the above setting on, printing from Adobe Acrobat with "print on both sides>flip on long edge"
Unsure what other settings I might be missing. The one time I was able to get it to work was with settings #1 and #2, but that hasn't worked again.

One or more of the following should help...
Simply ignore anything you've already tried.
Printer Software
If you have not done so,
If the full driver printer software is installed,
Uninstall the printer software from Programs and Features,
(Re)Install the Full Driver / Full Feature Software
First...
Uninstall Existing Printer Software (Full Feature Software)
Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features >
Find / Select > Uninstall the printer software
If software will not uninstall, appears to be removed and it “still hanging around”
Microsoft: Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed
OR
Revo Uninstaller (Free version)
After the software is removed, Restart the computer and log in
Next...
Install Full Driver / Full Feature Software
If you have not done so, download-save-install the Full Feature Software / Full Driver for the printer
Full Driver / Full Feature Software does not require a sign-in to use the software.
Download / save / run
HP Easy Start Printer Setup Software
- Download-and-Save the printer software (Full Feature Software / HP Smart / Easy Start)
- Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
- Reminder: If using Easy Start, select the Full Driver
Easy Start...
About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the basic driver).
Any...
If using USB: Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the last part of the driver installation)
After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.
Full driver provides print and scan functions.

Duplex feature installed? (Model Dependent)
Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >
Right-Click Printer > Printer Properties > tab Device Settings >
Beneath Installable Options > Automatic Duplexing Unit > Select / Verify Installed > OK

Duplex feature in Printing Preferences (Model Dependent)
Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >
Right-Click Printer > Printing Preferences
Select a shortcut that provides the feature and leave that shortcut highlighted (selected)
And / Or (if your printer software supported “custom shortcuts”)
Select a shortcut > Make changes that includes “Duplex”
NOTES
- Not sure where to start? Select Shortcut “Everyday Printing” or “Everyday Scan”
- Remember to check the settings within each Tab section
- Pay attention – not all Media types (kind of paper) and / or paper sizes support Duplex
Optional
Save the changed shortcut settings by clicking on the Master (currently selected shortcut) or use “Save As” (wording varies) to create a Custom shortcut
If you like, leave that (new / custom) shortcut highlighted as the “default”
Click Apply / OK to save the shortcut

- Download and Save the doctor to your computer
- Open File Explorer > Navigate to the folder in which you saved the file (likely Downloads)
- Execute the doctor – Answer any prompts / let the process complete
- Restart the computer, log in, and wait for the final steps in the Doctor to finish.

Original Notes – Contributed by ShlomiL
Paraphrased
Connection Issues
- Print and Scan Doctor Version 5.0.7 creates a secondary queue for printing with TCP/IP port.
After the Offline Doctor completes…
Verify / Adjust the “Default” printing device (Default Printer)
Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners
UNCHECK (clear box) Let Windows manage my default printer
Select (Left-Click) your printer from the list of printers > Manage > Set as Default
OR
Open Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on printer > Set printer as Default
NOTES – Selecting Default Printer
- Do not select the printer marked as “Scan Only / DO NOT DELETE”
- Do not select the printer marked as “Fax”
Example Default Printer: Set “Default” Printer = HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 series PCL-3 (Net)
Reference: HP Printers - Printer is Offline (Windows) > Step 2: Manually set the default printer

@dragon-fur
When installing the software and full drivers, I almost finished set-up until the following error popped up, stating that it can't complete set-up because internet connection was lost.
Except, the internet connection is fine, and there's absolutely nothing to fix. When I go to the link provided, it just takes me here, and has me download the exact same software and go through the exact same steps, just to arrive at the exact same problem. Unsure where to go from here.

What happens if you click "continue later"?'
Can you "X" out of the little message?
I am guessing that this last little bit is not necessary.
For example, one of the very last things the installation wants to do (as I recall) is to open a web browser - something about Instant Ink or some such thing.. ?? It's not needed to install the printer software.
That said, it obviously doesn't work for you.
I am out of ideas for the moment.
If you have words of wisdom, please share.
Thanks!

OK.
One more try...
Printer Turns Off Unexpectedly or Repeatedly
Start at Step 2: Restart the printer
I am not convinced the printer actually needs service (last option) - there is something else going on, I think...
I'm out of ideas.
Normally, one of the options would have helped.
Wait to see if we get a response here, or maybe better, start a new thread and ask your question - I promise not to answer it. Smiling.
