HP Officejet Pro 8135e all in one Printer was working fine, but now it's not printing and says it needs IP address. How do I fix this?

If it matters, my computer is a MacBook (new).

Hi @MicheleR-25,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e isn’t printing and shows a message saying it needs an IP address. Let’s go through a few steps to manually assign or check the printer’s IP address and get it working again.

a. Check Printer’s Network Connection

On the printer’s control panel, swipe down or press the Wireless icon.

Ensure it’s connected to your Wi-Fi network.

If not, go to Wireless Setup Wizard → Select your Wi-Fi network → Enter password to reconnect.

b. Print the Network Configuration Page

From the control panel, tap Setup → Reports → Network Configuration Page.

This report shows the current IP address (for example, 192.168.1.xxx).

If it shows “Auto IP” or “0.0.0.0,” your printer isn’t getting a valid address from the router.

c. Assign a Manual IP Address

On the printer, go to Setup → Network Setup → Advanced Settings → IP Settings → Manual.

Note your network’s IP range (e.g., if your Mac’s IP is 192.168.1.5, you can assign the printer 192.168.1.250).

Enter:

IP Address: 192.168.1.250 (example)

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: same as your router’s IP (usually 192.168.1.1).

Save settings and restart the printer.

d. Add Printer Back on Your Mac

On your Mac, click Apple Menu → System Settings → Printers & Scanners.

Remove the old printer entry (if present).

Click Add Printer (+) → choose IP tab.

In the Address field, type the printer’s IP address (from the network report).

Protocol: AirPrint (preferred) or HP Smart.

Click Add to save.

I hope this helps.
