HP479

I have always used my laser printer to print on normal consumer checks.  I did it with my LaserJet 4P and then with the Dell color laser that replaced it.  But the Dell just died after 15 years and I just replaced it with an HP479.  I tried manually feeding a check (long ways as I always have).  The feeder grabbed it, rotated it about 45 degrees printed it and then it jambed and I had to retrieve it from the rear door.  It then printed the image on a sheet of paper from tray 2 (bad move it was supposed to be using manual feed on tray 1--it should never automatically change as a result of a paper jamb).

I tried again more carefully.  Same result.  It goes about half way in and then something grabs one edge of it and yanks it sideways.  Only the second time it didn't jamb.  It is still somewhere inside the printer.  I can't find it and the printer doesn't think there is anything wrong.  It just disappeared into thin air.

How do I make a small piece of paper like this feed?  It's 2-3/4 inches wide.  I could put it in short way and rotate the image accordingly, but my past experience with other printers is that short stuff tends to get lost between consecutive rollers.
