HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello. The HP Smart App for my HP Pro 8720 All-in-One printer has very recently started to become problematic. When I want to scan a document, I open the HP Smart app on my Windows 10 HP Envy Pavillion desktop. It now always says "Printer Asleep", even though I have set it for 5, 15 and 30 minutes before sleeping. I then have to turn the printer off, wait ten seconds and turn it back on. If that doesn't fix the problem, I then have to request that a page be printed. One of the solutions previously posted suggested scheduling periodic status checks. How do I do that? Thanks for whatever solutions you have for this very new and annoying situation.

Hi @chdiamo,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I'm sorry you're dealing with such an inconvenient issue with your HP Pro 8720 printer. It's frustrating when the app shows the printer as asleep even when it's ready to use. Let’s work together to resolve this for smoother scanning.

  • Has this issue started after a recent software or firmware update to either the printer or the HP Smart app?
  • Are the printer and your computer connected via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and do you experience any connection drops with other devices on the network?
  • Have you tried scanning directly from the printer’s control panel to check if the issue is app-specific?

Let's try these steps.

Check Sleep Settings on Printer

  • Access the printer's control panel and navigate to Settings > Preferences > Power Management.
  • Ensure that the sleep timer is set to your desired duration (e.g., 15 minutes). Disable or increase the sleep time if necessary.

Update Firmware and HP Smart App

  • Visit the HP Support website to check for firmware updates for your HP Pro 8720.
  • Ensure you’re using the latest version of the HP Smart app. If not, update it via the Microsoft Store.

Set Static IP for the Printer

  • Log into your router settings and assign a static IP address to your printer to avoid connection issues.
  • Update the printer’s IP address in the HP Smart app by removing and re-adding the printer using its static IP.

Enable Status Monitoring

  • Open the HP Smart app and look for settings to enable printer status monitoring.
  • If periodic status checks are not listed in the app, you can schedule them using Windows Task Scheduler:
    • Open Task Scheduler on your PC.
    • Create a task to send a print job or wake-up signal to the printer at regular intervals.

Power Cycle Network and Devices

  • Turn off your printer, computer, and router.
  • Wait for 2–3 minutes, then turn on the router, followed by the printer and your computer.
  • This refreshes connections and resolves temporary network issues.

Let me know if these steps help.
