Hi

I want to print photo or image of any size ie; 6x4 or 7x5 on an A4 paper ? Every time I load A4 paper the only printing size option is A4 and other smaller sizes are not available. How can I skip that annoying detection. My previous HP printer didn't have that issue I could print any size of image A6, A5 and others on an A4 paper . Now it's gone. Any idea how to change this. I'm using android phone Pixel 8 and also but reluctantly PC with windows.

Thanks for help

@PiotrBB, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your Turning Off Paper Size/Type Detection on HP Printer for Custom Photo Printing!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

You can achieve the desired printing on your HP printer by ensuring it prints any image size on an A4 paper without restrictive detections. Here are the steps to bypass paper size/type detection and allow printing custom photo sizes on an A4 sheet:

Adjust Printer Settings on Android:

  • Open the HP Smart App on your Android device.
  • Select your printer and go to 'Printer Settings'.
  • Ensure you have the latest printer firmware and software updates applied.
  • Navigate to 'Paper Settings' and disable 'Automatic Paper Size Detection' if available.
  • Set the paper size to A4.

Adjust Printer Settings on PC:

  • Open the print dialog from any application you are printing from.
  • Select your HP printer and click 'Printer Properties' or 'Preferences'.
  • Go to the 'Paper/Quality' tab.
  • Set the paper size to A4.
  • In the 'Paper Options' section, disable any automatic paper size detection feature.

Using HP Smart App:

  • Open the HP Smart App and select a photo to print.
  • Choose the printer settings and manually select A4 paper size.
  • Under print settings, ensure no automatic detection is interfering with custom print sizes.
  • Print your photo ensuring the image size settings are configured manually.

Print from Android (Pixel 8):

  • Open the desired image.
  • Click on the print icon.
  • Select HP Printer.
  • Choose print settings manually, ensuring paper size is set to A4.
  • Adjust the layout settings to fit the photo size (6x4, 7x5) within the A4 paper.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi thanks for coming back to me.

Unfortunately it doesn't work on my Pixel 8. With this new printer I don't have any options you're mentioning (look at the screenshots below). It's really annoying that because of so called "smart features" you can't do simple task like printing an image in any size on any size of paper.

I'm still looking forward to your help.

As I mentioned before I could use my PC but I hate the fact that I have to give up my mobile phone printing option.

Hi @PiotrBB

Thank you for the detailed screenshots — super helpful! I understand how annoying it can be when a newer printer limits what used to be a simple task. Let’s try to work around it.

Use the "Fill Page" or "Fit to Page" Scaling

From your third screenshot, tap on "More options" > Document tab.

Set Scaling to "Fill Page" (or Fit to Page, depending on your need). This helps bypass the lo

cked paper size by tricking the printer into printing the image across the A4 sheet.

Ensure Paper Size is set to A4.

Use a Photo Editing App to Create an A4 Canvas

If Scaling doesn't fully help:

Use a free app like Canva or Photo Editor.

Create a custom canvas of A4 size (210mm x 297mm).

Place your 6x4 or 7x5 image on it with your desired layout.

Save it and then print that new image – the printer will treat it as an A4 document.

PC Backup Option

Since you mentioned reluctantly using a PC, you can disable paper size detection more easily via:

Printer Properties > Advanced > Printing Defaults > Paper Size

Manually set to A4 and select scaling or image layout options in apps like Paint or Word.

Let me know if you'd like help trying any of these options live. You're definitely not alone in this — many users prefer the control older printers offered. We'll get you printing the way you want!

If our solution hit the spot, please click "Accepted Solution" to help others find the answer. And if you'd like to say thanks, select "Yes" on the bottom left as that would make our day!

Thanks for trying to help but you know very well that your suggestions are only ways of bypassing an inherent problem that sits within HP product. You yourself said

"You're definitely not alone in this — many users prefer the control older printers offered"

I'm very not happy with the fact that quite important part of manual control has been removed from HP printers ( I only wonder is it the case with budget ones and if so then what is the minimum price tag to get that feature back).

If you buy camera you have at least specifications that tell you which one is professional, semi-professional or an idiot one. With HP printer like mine there's no such information so you buy "idiot printer" without even knowing that.

Sorry for using "idiot" word it's not for offensive purpose.

It's a pity that very likely someone with good intentions made things worse. I'm pretty sure it is a matter of changes to software possibly by some update but I'm not a specialist in this matter.

You as a HP support Team could make a pitch about this issue but for now thanks for trying to help me.
