Microsoft Windows 11

I got a couple of HP printers. One is a Laserjet pro M255nw, wired connected to my network, fixed IP-address.
On my desktop computer, both HP printers show up on the  HP Smart app.

On my wife's laptop however, connected to the WiFi, the black/white laser Neverstop 1200w is detected. I tried to use the option "wired" and give the IP-address. Still not found. Even more strange: I can ping the printer and he responds. Installing a printer in the Windows 11 environment and using it's IP-address, she can print on the printer.  But, still not detected on the HP Smart app.
So, I connected the Laptop wired to my network. -> printer is immediate detected by the HP Smart app.

Actually no problem printing, using an IP-address, but I feel like when the computer is connected Wirelessly, the app only detects Wireless connected printers in the network.
I use fixed IP-addresses for all my printers and they are in the same segment of the network. The only difference is that the computer is connected wirelessly or wired.
Does anyone has an explaination for this behaviour or is it a bug in the HPSmart software ?

Hi @Blenchi, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
You're on the right track in suspecting that HP Smart behaves differently depending on whether a device is connected via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Here are some potential fixes:

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Check Router Settings

  • Look for "Wireless Isolation" or "AP Isolation" and disable it.
    • This is a common setting on mesh networks and guest Wi-Fi setups.
  • Enable Multicast Forwarding (if available).
    • Some routers have an option for mDNS Repeater or Bonjour Forwarding, which helps in discovering network devices across different connection types.
  • Try turning off "Smart Connect" if enabled.
    • Some routers automatically switch devices between 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, which can sometimes interfere with device discovery.

2. Manually Add Printer in HP Smart

Since the laptop can print via IP but HP Smart doesn’t detect the printer:

  1. Open HP Smart.
  2. Click on Add Printer > Add using IP Address.
  3. Enter the fixed IP of your LaserJet Pro M255nw.
  4. If it still doesn't appear, try installing HP Easy Start and adding the printer from there first.

3. Disable Firewall Temporarily

  • Temporarily disable Windows Defender Firewall (or any third-party firewall).
  • Restart HP Smart and check if the printer is detected.
  • If it works, create an exception for HP Smart and allow mDNS, SSDP, and UDP 5353 through the firewall.

4. Try a Different Wi-Fi Network (or 5GHz vs 2.4GHz)

  • If your router has both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, check if the laptop is on the same frequency as the printer.
  • If using a mesh network, try connecting the laptop to the same node as the wired printer.

5. Alternative: Install HP Smart on a Different Laptop

  • If another Wi-Fi laptop detects the printer in HP Smart, then the issue is specific to your wife's laptop.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I already tried connecting to another node on my mesh network. And no, AP isolation is not on.
I already added the printer to HP Smart while attaching her laptop to our network.
Indeed, I use 2.4 / 5GHz auto switching to give the best result of connection without the users having to select a certain band.
We have quite a big area to cover. Throughout our house 5GHz is the leading frequency, but having a very big garden, the auto-switching to 2.5 makes a seamless connection possible in the parts further away.
All my printers (2 HP's & 1 Canon photo printer) are given a static IP in their configuration, excluded of the DHCP range of my router.
For now, using a fixed IP-setting in the printer-driver given the best results for both her Asus laptop and my Dell laptop. The automatic settings by the driver-installation were too unstable. Sometimes a print would roll out and on other occasions the queue stated the printer off-line.  Solved that by using a fixed IP in the settings of the queue.
