hi all, my printer must have been doing a firmware update when a power blip happened and now it won't "start up". it's stuck on the HP logo display screen that you see when it first turns on... the progress bar on the screen is almost at the end but it just sits there. I spoke to some tech person here who advised me to get a USB printer cable, which I did and now I'd like to circle back with someone at HP who is familiar with resetting this firmware/printer with this USB cable. the tech guy told me once I had this we would be able to reset this printer and get it working again. I've never had an issue with this printer so I know it's fine, it's just a matter of this thing not "booting up" now and I don't want to trash it if we can simply "reset" it...

Hi @FL_Hawkeye,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It seems your HP Envy Photo 7800 series printer is stuck during the startup process, likely due to an interrupted firmware update. Here's a step-by-step guide you can follow to try to resolve the issue:

Steps to Resolve:

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect all cables, including the power cord, from the printer.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to a direct wall outlet (avoid using a power strip).
  • Turn the printer back on and check if it starts normally.

Printer Firmware Recovery:

  • If the printer fails to start properly, attempt a firmware recovery process. This usually involves using a USB printer cable and a computer:
  • Connect the printer to a computer using the USB cable.
  • Download and install the HP app. HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site.
  • Restart the printer and the computer, then check if the printer status changes.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

hi Jerry, so we've tried multiple hard resets and nothing is working. I've also tried the reboot with the USB cable and it is still stuck on this "boot" screen. The HP app diagnosis also fails and just says Printer Offline issue not fixed when I run the diagnosis. So I am still stuck with a printer I can't reset or use

Hi @FL_Hawkeye,

Thank you for your response.

I understand your HP Envy Photo 7800 printer is stuck on the initializing screen; it may be an indication of firmware, connection, or internal hardware issues. Below are some troubleshooting steps you can take to try to resolve the problem:

Disconnect and Reconnect:

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect all cables, including the power cable.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Turn the printer back on without reconnecting any other cables except for the power cable, and see if it progresses past initialization.

Firmware Update:

  • Check if there is any firmware update available for your printer model on the HP Support website.
  • If possible, update the firmware to the latest version and restart the printer.

Remove Paper Jams:

  • Turn off the printer and check for any paper stuck inside.
  • Remove all paper and reload it correctly in the tray.

Disconnect and Reconnect the Ink Cartridges:

  • With the printer turned on, open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Remove the ink cartridges, inspect them for any adhesive or blockage.
  • Reinstall the ink cartridges and close the access door.

Restore Factory Settings:

  • Turn on the printer and let it sit on the initializing screen.
  • Press and hold a combination of buttons like the “Cancel” and “OK” or “Cancel” and “Copy Color” buttons for 10-15 seconds to try resetting the device to its factory settings.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

hey Jerry, this is a 7858 Envy photo printer, it's doesn't have a cancel button, etc... is has this screen and a power button, that is it and the screen can't be used because it doesn't fully "boot" and the power button does not respond. the only way I can power this on or off is to literally unplug it...  and since I can't access the main screen, I can't do anything, e.g. firmware update or anything else... this is literally a dead end unless you can tell me how I can force this &*(^^ printer into resetting so I can access the screen to do an update, etc.. to it... otherwise again, am I dealing with a completely useless printer??? that worked fine just a few weeks ago before this power glitch... this is unbelievable that the software isn't smart enough to boot back or allow me to reset it....

Hi @FL_Hawkeye,

Thank you for your response.

I understand your HP Envy Photo 7858 printer is stuck on the initializing screen, and you cannot power it down using the power button. You can try the following troubleshooting steps:

Power Reset:

  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer while it is turned on.
  • Disconnect any USB cables connected to the printer.
  • Wait for approximately 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the back of the printer.
  • Ensure the printer is directly plugged into a wall outlet, avoiding power strips or surge protectors for the initial test.
  • Turn on the printer and check if it moves past the initializing screen.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Open the printer and inspect for any paper jams or obstructions that might be causing the initialisation issue.

Firmware Update:

  • Since the screen is not accessible, the firmware update directly through the printer cannot be performed. However, check Official HP® Support to see if there are updates available or instructions on how to update using a USB flash drive or other methods.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
