Hi @Aca1404,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP LaserJet MFP M438n isn’t showing the scanner in Image Capture on macOS Big Sur. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this:

Download the correct full-feature driver for macOS
Go to HP’s official support site and look for “HP LaserJet MFP M438 series” → macOS driver package. HP Support+2HP Support+2
Make sure you choose the version for macOS 11 (Big Sur).

Install HP Easy Scan and HP Smart
HP recommends using the app HP Easy Scan for scanning from Macs. HP Support
Also install HP Smart from the Mac App Store, which can help detect the scanner function.

Add the printer with both print & scan services
In System Preferences → Printers & Scanners → click “+” to add the printer.
Select the model from the network or USB list, then under “Use:” choose the HP driver (not “AirPrint” only), so that scan functions are enabled.

Ensure the scanner interface is recognised by macOS
In Printers & Scanners, select the HP device, click “Options & Supplies…” → go to the “Driver” tab and ensure “Scanner” or “Scan Interface” is listed/enabled.
If only printing services are listed, the scanner part is not fully installed.

Check security & privacy settings for scanning
Go to System Preferences → Security & Privacy → Privacy tab → “Files and Folders” and “Full Disk Access” or “Accessibility”.
Make sure HP Easy Scan and HP Smart are allowed to access the microphone and files, and the scanner.

Test scanning via HP Easy Scan
Open HP Easy Scan → select the HP MFP M438n as the scanner → click “Preview” or “Scan”.
If you can scan here, then you may return to Image Capture or other apps and the device should appear.

I hope this helps.
