Today I was in the HP Utility - All settings section, and I clicked on something, I think it was in the "device administration" and it gave me some kind of warning which I don't remember, but I clicked through anyway.
Now the function "Device Administration is locked. There is a padlock which has appeared on the icon.
Also, on the printer, many of the functions on the control panel are now locked. For example, I can not uae functions like "wireless setup wizard", or "quiet mode", and several others.
I was not asked for any password. Everytime I try to use one of the blocked functions the message is "This feature was locked or disabled by the device administrator" . ........"for more information contact the person who set up the printer"
I am the first and only sole owner and sole user of this printer. I bought it new. I must be the administrator. When I locked these functions today, I would have expected to have been asked for a password, at least, - I was not. And I would expect to be able to find the way to unlock what I locked. But I can't find any way to unlock what I locked. I tried the obvious things like uninstalling the printer, and re-installing it on my mac, and tried switching off and on again. all to no avail.
Please help me! This is too heavy to become a paperweight.

I noticed that these kinds of questions don't get too many replies. I searched around, and managed to find a solution -of sorts- I don't think it was a factory reset - I couldn't make it do that. However the folowing seemed to work.
On the printer control panel locate the buttons for "home" and "back". They may not be lit up - in which case you can not see them. The "home" button is the picture of a house, and the back button is a "U-turn" type of arrow. On my HP PageWide Pro MFP 477dw they are on the left hand side on the black panel, not the lit up centre panel.
Press, home, back, home, back, home, back alternatiely. They wont be lit up when you do this. Eventually a menu will appear "Enable Display Menu. You can switch various things on, like the network, including something called "Reset factory defaults". This last option does not reset. that option must be somewhere else - but I could not find it. At least some of the things which were "locked" became unlocked.

Okaaaaay So i figured it out!!!!!!! I finally did a factory reset for my computer!! One person said push the home and back button alternatively but it didnt work....SO, I kept playing with it.
While the printer is powered on you will only see the question mark lit on the left hand side (HP Officejet Pro 8620) but you are still able to press the home and back buttons. So, I first started pressing both of them simultaneously and holding it for a 10 seconds to see if it would do anything. I don't think it did anything(if i can recall correctly); I then tried holding just the back button for 10 seconds and it worked (i believed). It had a new menu that ask if i woulf like to do two different resets. If you would like to do a factory reset make sure to click on the semi-full reset.
Just try both and I am sure one will work. It happened so fast i just cant recall, plus its 2:30AM
Good Luck!

The most ridiculous hour I've spent in a long time. No one from HP knows how to reset a * printer! Wow, this is incredible. So, after all other helpful but unsuccessful knowledge from the user, not the hired staff...I figured out you must push the back button over and over again until a support option comes up, then do the semi-full reset. I still wish I could've thrown it in the street, but I need it right this second. HORRID. I'll never buy anything HP ever again. I'm tainted for life. And, been in the IT industry...a very long time.

Come on HP. Try to make your printers more user friendly. If nothing else, just give us a very easy to find “Factory Reset” button, so if all else fails and the printer is locked up we can start over again as if it was brand new.
