Honestly, there are a few (several, actually) places this can go sideways..

Some ideas...

Reminder:

Read / select / ignore the suggestions as they are considered / tried / deemed useful in your situation.

Windows Updates

All your Windows Updates must be current and installed.

Settings > Update and Security > Check for Updates

If any updates are installed, Restart the computer and log in.

Your Windows Operating System version and your printer must support the HP Smart application.

HP Smart for Windows

HP Smart is an application available in the Microsoft Store

Learn how to use HP Smart on your Windows 10 computer.

Open the Software and Drivers Support Website for your printer > Check the Box Get the App

Open >>> HP Printers - Using the HP Smart App (Windows 10)

NOTES:

  • HP Smart requires that you sign into the application using your HP Account credentials.
  • Document includes the HP Smart application download links for Windows and Mobile devices, plus an FAQ section to assist with questions / issues.
    •  FAQ examples:
      • What are the requirements to use the HP Smart app?
      • Which printers are compatible with the HP Smart app?
      • Why do I need to sign in or create an account to use the HP Smart app features?
    • Older versions of the HP Smart app no longer support the login feature.
    • Update the application to the latest version to access / use HP Smart

Easy and Fast - Restart devices and router

If you have not done so, Restart everything, including your router.

Will that work?

Likely not, but it might and it is faster and least complicated of all options...

========================================================================

Re-register the Microsoft Store

Most likely to work when the Issue / Root cause is a tangle in the Microsoft Store...

====================================================================

What else?

Less likely to work but easy and fast...

Remove / Reinstall the offending application

The most obvious solution is to uninstall the offending application > Restart the computer > Download / Install the application.

Does that work?

Yes, sometimes it does.

Remove / Install Steps:  Settings > Apps > Apps and Features > scroll down, find, Click on HP Smart > Uninstall > Restart the computer and log in.  A new copy of the application can be downloaded / installed from the Microsoft Store (formally Windows Store).

========================================================================

Check / Update Microsoft Store for Application Updates

Another fix that might work - especially if you have your Microsoft Store automatic updates switched off in the Store settings is to simply Check / Update the application.

Check / Update applications in / from the Microsoft Store

Windows key > Open the Tile for Microsoft Store

If necessary, sign into the store

Click on “See more”  (three horizontal dots  )

Select Downloads and Updates

Click Get Updates

Check the list for the HP Smart version (third column)

If HP Smart has been updated,

If you have not done so since the date / time updated,

Restart the computer and log in

========================================================================

"Fix problems" in the Microsoft Store

There are the usual "Store" fix-it remedies that might fix general issues with the store not cooperating.

From Microsoft:

Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store

========================================================================

No Joy - Hands Up - Can't fix the Store

If the problem is bad enough, the issue is likely deeper into the Windows File System.

Bad enough and you might consider reloading Windows.

Everyone hates this remedy - and it works.
