I have the "admin" password set on my printer and have just tried to change it. While it appeared to accept the new password I find that I am now unable to access the admin functions on my printer. It won't accept either the original or new password. A Windows security "pop up" box is displayed from "Server at IP address" (the embedded web server I believe) asking for a username and password.  As it won't accept either password it then locks the settings.  I have tried removing the power cord while the printer is powered on and idle and then reinserting the power cord after a couple of minutes, this doesn't solve the problem.

I presume that I need to perform a "semi full" reset but I don't know how to perform this, can anybody assist?

Thanks for your prompt response.  I couldn't restore the network to defaults as this option wasn't available - locked out (padlock shown).  Also entering the IP address in my web browser wouldn't work as the "admin" password" was required.

Fortunately, I've resolved the issue. The problem was caused by "copy and paste". I use strong passwords created by a password generator. In this instance, the final character in the new password was an asterisk *. It appears that when I pasted this new password in against "admin" as the new password that this final character was not included. Pure guessword but I tried the new password minus the asterisk and all is well.  Thnaks for your suggestions.

Hey there! @LMX, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand you need to know how to reset the username and password on embedded web server page on your printer.

Don't worry I'd like to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Excellent description and a great diagnosis done. It is greatly appreciated.

Without restoring the network to defaults you cannot change the EWS username and password.

Try restoring the network settings to default and check if it helps.

Touch (right arrow), touch Setup, and then touch Network. Touch Restore
Network Defaults, and then select Yes. A message appears stating that the
network defaults have been restored.

Note: Restoring the printer to network defaults will remove all the devices connected to the printer. You have to reconnect the devices back to the printer again.

If the issue still persists try restoring the printer back to factory settings and check if it helps.

Touch (right arrow), touch Setup, select Reports and then select Print
Network Configuration Page to print the network configuration page and verify
that the network settings have been reset.

Also, try the steps recommended below.

  1. Open a web browser and type the printer IP address in the address field exactly as it appears on the Configuration Page, and then press Enter.

  2. Click the Security tab, and under General Security, set the local administrator password.

    1. Keep the username default as admin.

    2. Type the New Password and Verify Password.

    3. Navigate to the bottom of the page and click Apply.

Use these credentials the next time you Log In to the EWS.

Refer the print user guide for more information. Click Here

I hope you have a great day! 🙂

@LMX, Thanks for writing back to us.

I appreciate your efforts for writing back to us.

As you mentioned you have issues restoring the printer to default after trying out the steps.

Try performing a semi-full reset on your printer and check if it helps.

As the steps to perform a semi-full reset is confidential and dedicated to your printer. I will be sending the instructions through a private message.

Please watch your inbox for more information.

Hope this helps!

Take Care! 🙂
