Hi @Gretchen1966,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're having trouble setting up your new HP Color LaserJet Pro 3201dw on macOS 10.12 Sierra.

Here are a few troubleshooting steps that should help you resolve this issue:

1. Check Network Settings:

  • Verify Wi-Fi Connection: Make sure both your MacBook and printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Double-check that there are no separate networks for 2.4GHz and 5GHz, as this could cause connection issues.
  • IP Address: Ensure the printer has a valid IP address by printing a Network Configuration Page from the printer’s settings. The IP address should be in the same range as your MacBook (e.g., 192.168.1.x).

2. Update Printer Drivers: HP Easy Start

macOS 10.12 Sierra may not have the most up-to-date drivers for the HP Color LaserJet Pro 3201dw.

  • Go to HP's Driver Download page and search for your printer model.
  • Download and install the latest driver or HP Easy Start (an automated setup tool) for macOS.

Ensure that the driver you download is compatible with macOS 10.12. If HP no longer supports macOS 10.12 for this printer, you may need to consider upgrading macOS for better driver support.

3. Install the Printer Manually:

If the automatic setup isn't working, you can add the printer manually:

  • Open System PreferencesPrinters & Scanners.
  • Click the + button to add a new printer.
  • Select the HP Color LaserJet Pro 3201dw from the list. If it doesn't appear, try adding it using the printer's IP address.
  • Choose the correct printer driver from the list (you may need to choose HP JetDirect Socket if no dedicated driver appears).

4. Use AirPrint (if supported): Set up the HP printer with AirPrint in macOS

  • If HP drivers aren't working correctly, check if your HP Color LaserJet Pro 3201dw supports AirPrint, which allows printing without additional drivers. When adding the printer in Printers & Scanners, select AirPrint as the printing option.

5. Check Firewall/Security Settings:

Ensure that no firewall or security settings on your router or macOS are blocking the connection between your printer and laptop.

6. Restart Devices:

Sometimes a simple restart of both the printer, router and your MacBook can help re-establish the connection.

7. Reset Printer Settings:

If the issue persists, try resetting the printer to factory defaults and attempting the setup again:

  • On the printer's control panel, navigate to the Network Settings and choose the option to Restore Defaults.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
