I need to be able to install the driver (hp deskjet 2742e) to be able to use my newly acquired printed which i bought from another person second hand.  However hp dashboard keeps prompting expired warrantee and blocks me from accessing the executable files to install this printer in my system. Please what do i do?

@OPUTACO, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're trying to install your HP DeskJet 2742e printer on Windows 10, but are being blocked by HP Smart/Dashboard due to an expired warranty. Don't worry—your printer should work just fine, regardless of the warranty status. Let me walk you through a few steps to get the driver installed and your printer up and running:

Skip HP Smart App – Use Direct Driver Download

The HP Smart app sometimes restricts access based on warranty status, but you can bypass this by downloading the full driver package directly from HP support site:

Download HP DeskJet 2742e Drivers for Windows 10

  • On the page:
    • Select Windows 10 as your OS (if not auto-detected).
    • Download the “HP Easy Start Printer Setup Software” or “Full Feature Software and Drivers”.

Install the Driver Manually

Once downloaded:

  • Right-click the installer file and choose “Run as administrator.”
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Disable HP Smart App (Optional)

If HP Smart is interfering:

  • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
  • Locate HP Smart, click Uninstall.
  • You can reinstall it later if needed, but it’s not required for basic printing/scanning.

Add Printer Manually (if needed)

If the printer doesn’t auto-detect:

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Click Add a printer or scanner.
  • If Windows doesn’t find it, click “The printer that I want isn’t listed” and follow the wizard to add it manually via USB or Wi-Fi.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
