HP laser jet pro mfp m29w
Chrome OS

I cannot connect printer and chrome book using USB cable.  I have done all the clearing and restarting. I can't add the printer manually.  I need the IP address.  Can't get the IP address because I can't connect printer to chrome book. I have tried all HP support suggestions. always comes back to IP address. also when you put in the serial number you get a color printer.  That's not what I have. Yes its out of warranty and I only use the printer a few times a month if that. thank you for your help.

@TeeC2, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help resolve the issue with your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M29w not connecting to your Chromebook via USB, and how to retrieve the IP address for network setup:

Try USB Setup on Chromebook

HP printers can be connected to Chromebooks via USB, but the setup must be done manually:

  1. Connect the printer to your Chromebook using a USB cable.
  2. On your Chromebook:
    • Click the clock in the bottom-right corner.
    • Click the Settings ⚙️ icon.
    • Scroll down and click Advanced.
    • Under Printing, click Printers > Add Printer.
    • If your printer appears, select it and click Add.

If the printer does not appear, it may not support USB printing on Chrome OS. In that case, proceed to the wireless setup.

Get the Printer’s IP Address via Wireless Setup

Since USB isn’t working, you can retrieve the IP address by connecting the printer to Wi-Fi:

If your printer has no touchscreen:

  1. Press and hold the Wireless button on the printer for 5 seconds until the wireless light starts blinking.
  2. Within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on your Wi-Fi router.
  3. Wait for the wireless light to stop blinking – this means the printer is connected.

Once connected:

  • Print a Network Configuration Page by pressing and holding the Resume/Cancel button (usually the one with a red X or triangle) until the printer starts printing.
  • The IP address will be listed on that page.

Add the Printer to Chromebook via IP

Once you have the IP address:

  1. On your Chromebook, go to Settings > Advanced > Printing > Printers.
  2. Click Add Printer.
  3. Enter:
    • Name: Any name (e.g., HP M29w)
    • Address: The IP address from the config page
    • Protocol: IPP
    • Queue: ipp/print
  4. Click Add.
