Hi @cycletifosi,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Here’s what’s likely happening: Your HP Officejet 3830 is a Print/Copy/Scan/Fax device, and in Windows 11, your system is probably defaulting to the “Fax” driver instead of the “Printer” driver when you send a print job. That’s why you’re getting the “Recipient Fax Number” pop-up instead of it going straight to print.

Unfortunately, you can't disable the fax feature on the printer itself, but here’s what you can do to fix this cleanly:

Steps to Fix:

  1. Open your Printer Settings
    • Press Windows + I → go to Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.

  2. Look for two entries
    • You’ll probably see something like:
      • HP OfficeJet 3830 Series (Fax)
      • HP OfficeJet 3830 Series

  3. Set the correct one as the default
    • Click on HP OfficeJet 3830 Series (the one without “Fax”)
    • Choose Set as default

  4. Remove the Fax option (optional)
    • If you don’t use fax at all, you can right-click on the Fax printer and select Remove device to prevent confusion later.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. When I open up the printer settings the HP Officejet 3830 Series shows as the default printer and no reference to a 3830 FAX. When I click on the arrow on the far right of the printer, I don't get an option to set as my default printer...it just goes into the printer settings. I do have "let windows manage my default printer: turned on. So it does look like the 3830 is my default printer. Under the Fax settings I can find no option to turn off the Fax capabilities, however when opening up printer properties and opening up the ports tab I see that print to port was set for WSD IPP port, which is for Fax not standard printer. Changing that to the WSD...WSD Port corrected the problem. Now the standard print functionality works.

Thank you for inspiring me to explore the printer fax settings.

Hi @cycletifosi,

Thank you for letting me know, in this case I would suggest you to see if you can try this if this doest work do keep me posted on a private message with the printer details so we can help you better.

Please remove the Cartridges from the Printer if possible, and try a Hard Reset. Do keep us posted to help you better

** Hard reset :
1. Turn the printer on if it is not already on.
2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
8. Turn on the printer if it does not automatically turn on. The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
9. Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

HP Smart App: Please uninstall the HP Smart app --> restart the Device, Wi-Fi router and printer --> install it back and add the printer.

HP Firmware Update: Please update the Firmware from the link, This will help to update the firmware on the printer or devices

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
