I have been using my microsoft surface pro printer to print to my HP printers (3) for many years using the HP smart app. Now the app won't open (just the spinning circle of death) and I can't print anything.  I see that it no longer works with chromebooks. Is this a microsoft problem? I have 3 HP printers and I need to be able to print.

Hi @koe3,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that HP Smart App on your Microsoft Surface Pro is no longer printing to your HP printers, I would request you to please follow the steps:

Uninstall and Reinstall

  • Go to Settings → Apps → Installed Apps.

  • Restart your Surface Pro.
  • Reinstall from the Microsoft Store (search “HP Smart” or “HP App” — install it).

Reset the HP Smart App:

  • Go to Start > Settings > Apps.
  • Select HP Smart from the list.
  • Click on "Advanced options" and then "Reset."

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor:

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Ensure that your Surface Pro is running the latest version of Windows. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and check for updates.

The problem ended up being the Norton Antivirus software on my computer. This was figured out after 3 different IT people spent several hours working on the problem.

Hi,

Thank you for responding.

I regret to hear that you are facing issues with the Norton Antivirus on your computer. I would request you to please try this below step and revert with the results.

Norton Antivirus Settings

  • Open Norton Security dashboard.
  • Go to Settings > Firewall > Program Control.
  • Locate HP Smart and HP EasyStart in the list.
  • Set them to Allow or Auto instead of Block.
  • Do the same for Windows Print Spooler Service if listed.

Test Printing

  • Restart your Surface Pro.
  • Open HP Smart and send a test print.
  • If successful, the antivirus was the root cause.

Please revert.

Thanks and Regards
