After changing PC, I reinstalled 3 printers, but one refuses to register and finish set up, my HP 7600. I get error code After restore defaults, I can no longer register my printer, i get  Error Code: OW_4XX_OWSWS00001,

I tried both with HP Smart and the HP Apps and both show the 'finish set up' which ends up with 'registrering product' and then error code.  In the meantime, the printer is working but fails to register in account.  It is very annoying, and like always with HP extremely time consuming.

Hi @AnAnoun

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand you’re facing difficulty registering your HP Smart Tank 7600 printer on your new PC, even though the printer itself is able to print. Thank you for sharing the details of the error code and the steps you’ve already tried. Since the printer works but fails to complete registration, we’ll need to focus on the account setup and connectivity side.

To guide you accurately, could you confirm a few points for me:

  • The exact printer model (Smart Tank 7600 series has multiple variants, such as 7602, 7605, etc.).
  • Whether the printer is connected via Wi‑Fi or USB when you attempt registration.
  • If the HP App shows any additional message besides “Finish setup → Registering product → Error Code: OW_4XX_OWSWS00001”.
  • Whether this printer was previously linked to another HP account or Instant Ink subscription.

With those details, I can share the precise HP steps to clear the incomplete setup state and re‑register the printer successfully.

Could you share the model variant and connection type so we can proceed with the exact steps?

Thanks.  To my knowledge, I have a 7602 printer.

Also to my knowledge, it's always been associated to my current HP account.

Unfortunately, this printer is not elligible for the HP Instant Ink program for some reason.

It is connected to the same network as my PC, no USB involved etc.

No other messages than the error code that I mentionned. Basically times out when it

It all started with my new PC when I was asked to erase my personal information from the printer and restore default, ie PIN etc.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi @AnAnoun,

Thanks for your response and thank you for confirming those details. Since your HP Smart Tank 7602 is connected via Wi‑Fi and already prints successfully, the issue is specifically with the registration process on your new PC. Let’s try step by step to clear the incomplete setup state:

1.Clear Previous Setup Data

On the printer’s control panel, go to Settings → Printer Maintenance → Restore Factory Defaults.

This ensures any leftover account or PIN data from your old PC is erased.

2.Re‑Add Printer in HP App

On your new PC, open the HP App.

Select Add Printer - Smart Tank 7602.

Ensure your PC and printer are on the same Wi‑Fi network.

3.Sign in with Correct HP Account

When prompted, sign in with the same HP account that was previously linked to this printer.

Since the printer is not Instant Ink eligible, registration should only tie it to your account, not a subscription.

4.Retry Registration

In the HP App, click Finish Setup -Register Product.

If the error persists, try registering via the HP Support website directly by entering your printer’s serial number.

6.Final Option – Manual Registration

If the app continues to time out, go to  https://register.hp.com/ and register the printer manually using your HP account.

Since you mentioned the printer asked to erase personal information when connecting to the new PC, that reset may have caused the app to lose its link. Re‑registering through the HP App or HP’s website should help.

I hope this helps.

I finally took time to delete the printer from PC and from both HP app and HP smart App.  I then resetted the PC to factory default.  Started the resinstall on PC and HP apps. The printer is working, but after a long cycling, back to the same problem of registration OW_4XX_OWSW00001

I give up because not worth spending 20 hours to try to fix an HP software issue.  I have had HP for over 20 years, probably tens of printers in 3 different countries.  Occasionally, they get into huge software bugs like this that kill you. Over time, they've had so many different softwares, etc.

May be the easiest thing is to get a different brand next time and try that!

HI @AnAnoun,

I completely understand how exhausting this has been for you. You’ve already invested an enormous amount of time and effort resetting your PC, reinstalling the HP apps, and even going through factory defaults and still facing the same registration error.

At this point, since the issue persists despite all the troubleshooting, the best next step would be to have the printer checked directly at an HP Authorized Service Center. They’ll be able to run deeper diagnostics and resolve the registration loop that software resets haven’t fixed.

Our certified technicians can provide a thorough diagnosis and offer the best solutions to address the issue.

Thanks for your reply.

I will finish off this printer and move to another brand. Not time to take it to a repair place etc etc.
