Hi @MarkMcGuireUK,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for reaching out, and I’m sorry you’re running into the “Unexpected configuration problem – 0x80004005” error. I know how frustrating it is when printing suddenly stops working while scanning still works.
Let’s try a few steps to get this fixed:
1. Confirm Your Printer Model
So we can provide the correct steps, could you please share the exact HP printer model number (e.g., DeskJet, Envy, OfficeJet, LaserJet + model)?
While you share that, here are the most effective fixes:
2. Remove & Reinstall the Printer (Windows)
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & Scanners
- Select your printer → Remove device
- Restart the PC
- Reinstall using the HP app
3. Reset the Print Spooler (common fix for 0x80004005)
- Press Windows + R
- Type: services.msc
- Find Print Spooler → Right-click → Stop
- Go to: C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS
- Delete all files inside (do NOT delete the folder)
- Go back to Services → Start the Print Spooler
4. Run the Windows Printer Troubleshooter
- Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters
- Run Printer
5. Update HP app & Printer Drivers
Sometimes, outdated firmware or drivers cause this error.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
