I keep getting an expired certificate error on my MacBook Pro with hp smart tank 7005. When I check the certificate in settings it doesn't expire until 2035. I have only had the MacBook and printer for a few months

Hi @MikeLAug

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The expired certificate error on your MacBook Pro when using the HP Smart Tank 7005 is likely caused by a miscommunication between macOS and the printer’s encryption credentials. Even if the certificate shows a valid date, the system may still reject it due to how it’s presented or cached.

Thank you for already checking the certificate and confirming its validity — that’s a helpful step.

Let’s walk through a clean recovery process to restore secure communication between your Mac and printer.

Steps to Resolve the Expired Certificate Error on macOS

Remove the printer from System Settings

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Select your HP Smart Tank 7005 and click Remove Printer.

Reset the printer’s network settings

  • On the printer control panel, navigate to Settings > Network Setup > Restore Network Settings.
  • Confirm the reset and wait for the printer to restart.

Re-add the printer using the HP App

  • Download or open the HP App for macOS.
  • Ensure your Mac and printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Use the app to Add Printer and follow the prompts to complete setup.

Clear macOS certificate cache (no registry edits involved)

  • Open Keychain Access from Applications > Utilities.
  • In the left panel, select System and Certificates.
  • Search for any entries related to your HP printer.
  • If found, right-click and delete them.
  • Restart your Mac and re-add the printer via the HP App.

Print a test page

  • Once setup is complete, print a test page from the HP App or a document from your Mac.
  • If the error persists, try printing via USB to confirm if the issue is network-related.

  • This issue can occur even with valid certificates if macOS flags the encryption method or cached credentials as outdated.
  • Resetting both the printer’s network and macOS’s certificate cache helps re-establish trust between devices.
  • Always use the HP App for setup and management, as it ensures proper driver and security handling.

If you’d like, I can guide you through the exact screens in the HP App for adding the printer after the reset, so you can follow along without missing any steps.
