Interesting!

I suppose that the waste toner is stored somewhere in the cartridge & not recycled. Does the 3101 have a transport belt?

You state:

To help narrow down the possible field, it would be helpful to know if you are looking at monochrome or color printing.

Originally, I wanted a color laser. I'd love to have a color laser. But they're big & heavy & expensive. I've reconsidered getting a color. I probably wouldn't use the color capability very often.

So, does the HP 3101sdw laser printer come with drum inside toner cartridge or drum separate? I watched some YouTube videos that showed replacing the toner cartridge in the 3101sdw. I could see the drum. When one buys a replacement cartridge for the 3101sdw, is one also buying the drum as well? So, when one replaces the toner cartridge in the 3101sdw, one also replaces the drum unit as well?

Also, does the 3101sdw come with a transport belt? I think that they don't. The unused toner goes back into the toner cartridge, correct? I wonder how it manages to go back into the toner cartridge.

Sorry for the edit!

I'm researching 3 different brands!
