I just tried using a USB drive into the printer/scanner and scanning works fine -- meaning that the scanner / printer itself works fine. What doesn't work is the scanning connection to the Mac -- which would seem to mean it is a driver issue. I can use the "sneaker net" for now but it's a very laborious process.

Apple's update to Sonoma broke a lot of my software and through subsequent OS updates most of it is now working. But the scanning software remains broken some 3 months after the update. As stated above, I have very little confidence that Apple will put any time into fixing something that doesn't have Apple printed on it, and they seem to be more focused on selling expensive watches than helping their customers do unsexy things like scan so I'm really hoping HP steps up and figures this out.

Sorry I didn't check the Community Page in a while.  I made the change easy enough by going through~

system settings>PrintersScanners>HP7720/Open Scanner> "Scan To" - as one of the fields on that page making sure it was saved to desktop.

To this day it is the only way I can scan...grrr... but easy enough to shift files later.

I just got a new Mac with Sonoma. My HP 8710 doesn't connect for scanning now.

I called HP customer support who told me my six year old HP 8710 printer is "obsolete." The guy tried to implying it's an issue from Apple's side. He finally admitted that HP decided not to support the HP 8710 anymore with drivers for MacOS Sonoma. Thanks HP for bricking my perfectly fine HP 8710.

I hope you get hit with a massive class action. If any class action lawyers are interested, my name is Parviz Malakouti and I can be reached at [personal info removed]

Same issue here, and HP has no answer and apparently they just want us to buy a new printer. Typical non support from HP.
