HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One Printer

I've added all of the drivers but it still says printer isn't set up.  What gives?

Hi @ulissej61,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you’ve taken all the right steps by installing the drivers, so it’s understandably frustrating to still see a message saying your HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One Printer isn’t set up. Let’s walk through this together and get things working — I’ll guide you with care and clarity.

1. Check Connection Type

Is your printer connected via Wi-Fi, USB, or Bluetooth?

  • If USB: Try unplugging and reconnecting the cable. Make sure it’s a direct connection — no hubs or extenders.
  • If Wi-Fi: Ensure the printer is on the same network as your computer. Go to the printer’s Wi-Fi settings from the touchscreen and re-enter your network credentials if needed.

2. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor

HP offers a free tool that detects and resolves setup issues:

3. Check Windows Settings

If you're using Windows:

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners
  • Make sure the ENVY 5540 is set as the Default
  • If it says “Driver unavailable” or “Not set up,” try removing the printer and adding it again.

4. Printer Needs to Finish First-Time Setup

On the printer itself, check for any prompts:

  • Is there a blinking light or a message on the screen?
  • Some HP printers require inserting the initial setup cartridges or completing touchscreen steps before they’re fully recognized.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
