I purchased an HP ENVY Printer in mid- January 2024. I went to install it and it would not work, a fatal error message appeared on the HP site and it directed to an 800 number which I called. The person I spoke with identified himself as an HP employee. He tried to install the printer and was unsuccessful and said that their appeared to be a virus on my HP laptop that needed to be cleaned before the printer could be installed. He forwarded me to a security person who needed access to my laptop in order to see the issues and clean them up for me. He said that my laptop had a public IP address which he said was not good, it should be private. He then showed my what items on my laptop needed to be cleaned out in order for the virus/s to be removed. Before taking that next step I was asked to pay their fee of $1,659 dollars in order to complete the work and install the hp printer. Since they had control of my laptop, I felt that I was being held hostage and was concerned as to what they could do if I did not pay them. I made a credit card payment and they completed the work. The printer did function properly and they said that they installed so anti-virus programs. Needless to say I cancelled my credit card a few days later. I sent this issues to HP with my follow up reviews and never heard back from them. Very disappointing.
