Hi @AuntLulu55,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We’re really sorry this has been such a frustrating experience, especially when you only need the printer once a year, and it won’t cooperate right when you need it. We completely understand how aggravating that feels. Let’s slow this down and get your HP DeskJet 2800e printing.

STEP 1: Reset the printer's Wi‑Fi (this forces setup mode to restart)

On the HP DeskJet 2800e:

PRESS & HOLD:

Wireless button (📶) + Cancel (X)
for 5 seconds

The front light should:

  • flash purple or blue
  • Then go into blinking mode

This means the printer is now ready to be added again.

STEP 2: Add the printer using the HP Smart APP ONLY on your phone

Not your computer yet.

Why?
Because the 2800e MUST be fully set up in HP Smart once, or it will refuse every print request.

Do this:

  1. Open HP Smart on your phone
  2. Tap + Add Printer
  3. Choose DeskJet 2800e Series
  4. Select your Wi‑Fi network
  5. Finish the setup until HP Smart says Ready

DO NOT close the app early; let it finish everything.

After Step 2: TEST PRINT from your phone

If your phone prints, the printer is fully initialized and no longer in "HP+ lock mode."

STEP 3: NOW add the printer to your Windows 10/11 computer

Once the printer is fully set up via the phone, Windows will finally see it.

On your computer:

  1. Go to Settings → Bluetooth & Devices → Printers & Scanners
  2. Click Add a printer
  3. Select HP DeskJet 2800e Series
  4. Choose AirPrint or Secure AirPrint if asked
  5. Try printing again

This should now work instantly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
