I Updated Mac to Sequoia and was notified of an hp incompatible extension that will prevent further OS updates.

Where is the HP Inc. extension that is not compatible with future macOS updates?

What is it named?

How do I find it and delete it?

Hi @skiziks,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the "incompatible HP extension" message on macOS usually refers to outdated or unsupported printer drivers or software components that were installed previously. Here's how you can locate and remove these extensions to resolve the issue:

1. Identify the Incompatible HP Extension

The incompatible extension is likely related to the HP printer driver or helper tools. It might be named something like:

  • HP Device Monitoring. framework
  • HP Printer Utility
  • Hewlett-Packard or HP in /Library/Extensions or /Library/Printers

These files may be flagged by macOS as incompatible or legacy software.

2. Check for Incompatible Extensions

To locate the extension:

Check System Reports for Blocked Software:

  • Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac > System Report.
  • Scroll down to Software > Extensions.
  • Look for HP-related entries flagged as "Not Signed" or "Incompatible".

Manually Search for HP Extensions: Open Finder and check these locations:

  • /Library/Extensions/
  • /Library/Printers/
  • /Library/LaunchAgents/
  • /Library/LaunchDaemons/
  • /Library/Application Support/
  • /System/Library/Extensions/

3. Remove the Incompatible HP Extension

Once located, remove the extension files:

Manually Delete:

  • Right-click the identified files and select Move to Trash.
  • Empty the Trash to complete removal.

4. Reinstall Compatible HP Drivers

After removing the incompatible extension:

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Download and install the latest printer drivers for macOS Sonoma (Sequoia) from the HP Support website.

Use AirPrint (Recommended): Set up the HP printer with AirPrint in macOS

  • macOS supports AirPrint, which doesn't require additional drivers. Set up the printer via System Settings > Printers & Scanners and add it as an AirPrint printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
