recently had to reinstall Windows 11.  Printer will print documents, but will not scan.  Uninstalled HP Smart several times, does not connect to printer. I do not have WiFi on this desktop computer which the printer is connected to.  USB only connect.  Previous install that fully worked did not have a wifi setup.   Help is appreciated

Hi @JHL2

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it must feel to have your DeskJet 2755e print fine over USB but refuse to scan after reinstalling Windows 11. Thank you for already trying multiple reinstalls of the HP App—that shows real persistence.

Let’s go step by step to restore scanning with a USB‑only setup.

Step 1: Confirm Full Driver Package

  • Printing often works with basic drivers, but scanning requires the full driver/software package.
  • Download and install the complete software for your printer here:
HP DeskJet 2755e Printer Software and Drivers
  • Choose Windows 11 (64‑bit) and install the “Full Feature Software and Drivers.”

Step 2: Connect via USB During Setup

  • Disconnect the printer’s USB cable.
  • Start the installer you downloaded.
  • When prompted, connect the USB cable directly to the computer (avoid hubs or extension cables).
  • Allow the installer to finish detecting and configuring both print and scan functions.

Step 3: Test Scanning with HP App

  1. Open the HP App on your desktop.
  2. Add your DeskJet 2755e.
  3. Select Scan and try scanning a single page.
  4. Save the file as PDF or JPEG to confirm the scan completes.

Step 4: Verify Windows Scan Utility

  • Press Windows + S and type Windows Fax and Scan.
  • Open the app and select New Scan.
  • Choose your DeskJet 2755e from the device list.
  • Run a test scan to confirm the driver is working outside the HP App.

Step 5: Run Diagnose & Fix

  • In the HP App, select your printer.
  • Go to Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
  • This will check for missing scan drivers and repair the connection automatically.

These steps usually restore scanning when using USB‑only connections after a Windows reinstall. The key is installing the full driver package rather than relying on basic print drivers.

Thanks Hawks_Eye for your reply.  The link you provided does not work

this pops up after clicking on the link:

We're sorry

We can't seem to find the page you were looking for.

Try going back to Support Home or use our Diagnostic Solutions to resolve your product issues.

UPDATE:

read some additional posts from another poster and they had the same link as you but for reasons unknown the installation page connected.  I got the drivers needed to install the printer and scan function.  HP Smart app still doesn't allow me to install even though it did before. Maybe I did setup wireless printing and USB when I first installed printer after purchasing and that's why it worked.  But right now I'm good.  Thanks

Thanks for replying.

I’m sorry you hit a dead link—thank you for calling it out. You’ve already done a lot of the right things; let’s get scanning working over USB without relying on Wi‑Fi.

Install the full feature drivers (required for scan)

  • Why: Printing can work with basic drivers, but scanning needs the full driver and HP Scan components.
  • What to do: Install the “Full Feature Software and Drivers” for Windows 11 (64‑bit) for your exact model.
  • Next step: If you want, I can share the correct HP driver page for your country and model. Please confirm your country/region so I can provide the working link.

Clean USB setup and driver refresh

  1. Disconnect USB: Unplug the printer’s USB from the PC.
  2. Remove old instances:
    • Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners → select the DeskJet → Remove.
    • Open Device Manager → expand Print queues and Imaging devices → right‑click any DeskJet entries → Uninstall device.
  3. Install drivers: Run the full driver installer you’ll use; when it asks, connect the USB cable directly to the PC (avoid hubs/extension cables).
  4. Finish setup: Let the installer detect and configure both print and scan.

Verify scanning in Windows and HP app

  • Windows Fax and Scan:
    • Press Windows + S, type “Windows Fax and Scan,” open it.
    • Select New Scan, choose your DeskJet 2755e, run a test scan.
  • Windows Scan app (optional):
    • Open the Scan app (from Microsoft Store if needed), select the printer, test a scan.
  • HP App diagnostics:
    • Open the HP App, select your printer.
    • Go to Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix to repair missing scan components.

Audio and USB reliability checks

  • USB port/cable: Use a rear motherboard USB port if available; try a different cable to rule out intermittent connections.
  • Services: Press Windows + S, type “Services,” open it. Ensure Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) is set to Running (Startup type: Automatic). This service is required for scanning.

If the HP app doesn’t detect USB

  • Add via Control Panel: Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Add a device (USB should enumerate automatically after driver install).
  • HP Scan shortcut: After the full feature install, use the installed HP Scan application directly to test scanning.

Share your region for a working driver link

I can provide the exact HP driver page that matches your model and region so you can install the full feature package without any dead links. Please tell me your country/region, and I’ll send the verified link.

I'm in the United States

Thanks for replying @JHL2

For your HP DeskJet 2755e in the United States, you’ll need to install the Full Feature Software and Drivers package for Windows 11 (64‑bit). This package enables scanning over USB, which the basic driver does not. You can download it from HP’s official support page here: HP DeskJet 2755e Software and Drivers.

Why this matters

  • Printing vs. Scanning drivers: Printing often works with Windows’ built‑in drivers, but scanning requires HP’s full driver suite, which includes HP Scan components.
  • USB‑only setup: The DeskJet 2755e supports scanning over USB, but only if the full driver package is installed.

Step-by-step actions

Remove old drivers and devices

  • Disconnect the printer’s USB cable.
  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners → remove the DeskJet.
  • Open Device Manager → expand “Print queues” and “Imaging devices” → uninstall any DeskJet entries.

Install full feature drivers

  • Download the package from the link above.
  • Run the installer, and when prompted, connect the USB cable directly to the PC (avoid hubs or extension cables).
  • Allow the installer to finish detecting and configuring both print and scan functions.

Test scanning

  • Open the HP App on your Windows 11 PC. Add the DeskJet 2755e and select “Scan.”
  • Save a test scan as PDF or JPEG.
  • Alternatively, use Windows Fax and Scan (press Windows + S, type “Windows Fax and Scan,” select New Scan).

Run Diagnose & Fix

  • In the HP App, select your printer.
  • Go to Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix to repair missing scan components.

Check Windows Services

  • Press Windows + S, type “Services.”
  • Ensure “Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)” is running and set to Automatic. This service is required for scanning.

Download and install the full driver package from the verified HP support page, then reconnect your printer via USB during setup. This should restore scanning functionality on your Windows 11 desktop.
