Laserjet 5M
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Tryint to install an obsolete printer Laser Jet 5M in Win 10. I downloaded the drivers, used the Have disk option and pointed to the extracted directory. It started install but then told me can't install on this OS. A fatal error? Anyione know a workaround?

That is not the correct driver and will not work. They best you can hope for is to use a Windows Native driver as HP does nor support this printer in Windoelws 10. You may have luck if you use a Laserjet 4000 driver.

Which drivers did you download? I ask because HP does not list any drivers beyond Windows Vista. How are you connecting to the computer?

Went to the HP site, looked up the drivers specified for the printer and downloaded the lj205en.exe file. Pretty sure that's the same file I used to use with older systems. Connected to the computer via an LPT port. The computer can see the printer because I printed using an HP driver installed for a different printer -- but it printed out a garbage page, probably because the driver was for an incompatible color HP printer.
