HP OfficeJet Pro 7440
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I could not get a successful installation for printer drivers on my HP OfficeJet Pro 7440.   See the attached screen shot, below.

This problem came after I uninstalled the HP drivers -- Because my ReadIris Pro 15 scanner program could not find the printer / scanner.  And, the HP Print and Scan Doctor 5.3.1 tells me that it failed to communicate with my printer.

However, I can sorta print.  Some things are backed up in the que.

Also, I tried downloading other files for the drivers.  None would complete a successful installation.  And, I uninstalled the ReadIris program, before re-installing.

ReadIris web help helps tell me that I need to install "Network Twain Drivers" from HP to resolve their issue.  So far, I have not found the 'Twain' drivers.

Can someone tell me how to successfully install the HP 7440 FULL drivers.  If I can resolve that issue, it might take care of my problem with the scanner and the Twain drivers.

For most of today, I had no problems with any of this.  I cannot think of anything different that I did to cause this to happen.

Your help is appreciated, please.  Thanks.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:

Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer.

Once done, please download and install the software from here:

If the issue persists, create a TCP IP port

1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)

2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, right-click the printer and left-click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.

3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.

4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video resource will show you how to do it:

Create & Use TCP IP port

Let me know if this helps.

To Betty0610:

Thank you for the detailed reply for a solution.  I appreciate it and will implement it shortly.

I'm curious, what is the cause of the problem that I am about to fix?

Also, after I posted the problem, I was able to install the driver.  But there is still something not right.  The most notable is that my list list of applications does not show that the printer is installed, even though it is now printing and scanning.

When it did install and as I recall, a different window appeared after I restarted, by there was no hint before hand that it was going to do that.  It also asked me if I wanted to update, I said yes, it wouldn't install, and at the same time, the printer was no longer working.  After a couple more restarts, it installed.  And from there I have left it alone, not accepted any updates.  Naturally, I am hesitant to do anything until I have lots of time.

Obviously, there is a problem and it occurred without warning.  This printer is only a couple years old, and works great, as long as it is connected.

I would appreciate an explanation of what the problem might be.

Thanks.

Sure. At this point I can say, it could be a driver conflict. Let us know when you try our steps and it helps.

Betty:

This week an HP automated update popped up and yes, I clicked on 'install'.  Then the process came back and said the update failed to install.  Afterward, I could not scan via the Readiris Pro 15 program.

Needless to say, I will not be installing HP updates until something returns my trust in HP.

With that said, I got off work Friday noon today, ate some lunch with my wife, took care of some phone calls, then spent the remainder of my 'free' Friday afternoon working with my HP 7440 OfficeJet Pro.  I spent about 3 hours to uninstall, then reinstall the drivers.

I followed your instructions.  However, there was no HP Printer to uninstall or remove, even using a cleanup program.  Per your step 14, I did remove any and all HP folder and files.  And then I downloaded the drivers from HP, per your instructions.

The first installation failed.

Moving down the list of instructions, there was no printer to click on from which to create a port per the instructions.

So, I shrugged my shoulders and attempted another install.  It worked.

I can't tell you that I did anything different from the 1st attempt to the 2nd attempt.  This experience has been similar to the one from last month of which I wrote.

The HP update has forced me into trying your instructions so I could regain my scanner.  The instructions confirmed that I needed to uninstall and completely clean HP software off of my hard drive --- this, even though the printer was not there to uninstall, and while it was still printing.

After this install on 6/19, the printer is showing in my list of Apps, whereas before, it was not showing.

In summary, this has been a random mess.  Like I said, I will not be installing HP updates until something restores my trust.

This is a nice printer and I appreciate its capabilities.  However, the drivers have given me problems before.

Sorry that I can't give you a better report.
