Hey there! @Nic9, Thanks for stopping by HP forums!

I understand you have printer software installation issues.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

I would suggest you try a clean install to try and fix this issue. Follow the steps below:
First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
Go to Control Panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP LaserJet printer entries and uninstall them.
Now go to Control Panel – Devices and Printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
Restart your computer.
Click the bottom-left Start button on the desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.
Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.
Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Printer”  – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device un-install pop-up, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device".
Also, check the entries under "printer queue" and "imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says “Unknown device”.
Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
Again, go to "Run" window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
Once done you can try cleaning out your temporary files and cached files. You can try using automated applications like some cleaner software's that you can download from the internet.
Now restart your computer again.

Update the printer software using this link.

Connect the USB cable if prompted.

I'll watch your reply!

Have a great day ahead! 🙂

Mr Robot,

Thank you for responding to my post.

Unfortunatly, after following all your instructions, the problem remains.

when the setup is running, everything seems all right, but as soon as it come to 99%, it runs for a long time (about three or four minutes) and then give the message as I have mentioned.  It doesn't come to the step for installation.

I can print single pieces of printing, but duplex printing is a shamble.  No setting seems to rectify it.

I need to mention that my laptop did crash down whwn Windows 10 went in a loop.  it was at a technician to repair.  Before the crashdown, I did install the disk and the printer worked perfectly.

Can you assist me further.

@Nic9, Thanks for your quick response and time.

I appreciate your efforts for trying out the steps.

As you mentioned the issue still persists after trying out the steps.

Try the steps recommended below.

DO THIS DURING THE HP INSTALL PROCESS (when the percentage counter is going)
1. Go into the device manager and find the printer in the list of devices
2. Right click on the printer and select "Update Driver Software"
3. Click "Browse my computer for driver software"
4. Select "Let me pick from...."
5. Select the driver named: HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M125a PCL-6         (Make sure its the one with a dash between the PCL and 6!)
6. Click next and go back to the hp install box and it should now see the printer and continue the install.

Also, refer this article to further troubleshoot a Fatal Error Displays During Software Installation.

Let me know if this helps!

Have a great weekend ahead! 🙂

Good Morning Mr Robot,

I am like a fly in your soup at a formal dinner.

I followed your instructions, but the problem persist.

I couldn't find the the driver you recommended on the list, but tried to update drivers on the internet and recieved the following message:

"Windows found drivers for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install them.

HP Laserjet Pro M125-M126 PCLmS.

The printer driver is not compatible with a policy enabled on your computer that blocks NT4.0 drivers."

Can you assist?

@Nic9, thanks for your quick response and time.

I appreciate your efforts for trying out the steps.

As you mentioned when you try to install the drivers you are getting an error: Windows found drivers for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install them.

Please try the steps recommended below.

I suggest you run Hardware and Devices troubleshooter checks for common problems and makes sure that any new device or hardware connected to your PC is installed correctly.
Press Windows key from the keyboard, type Troubleshooting and select it.
Click on view all option on the upper left corner of Troubleshooting window.
Select the Hardware and Device options from the list.
Click Next to run the Hardware and Device Troubleshooter.

Press  W8K + R and type devmgmt.msc in the Run hit Enter key to open Device Manager snap-in.
In the Device Manager window, right-click on the device with which you’re facing the issue and select Update Driver Software.
Next, in the update wizard, choose to Browse my computer for driver software option.
Then in next screen, in Search for driver software in this location input box, type C:\Windows\WinSXS. Click Next.
Now Windows will begin the search for update driver in that location. This may take a while but will fix the issue for your device.
You can then retry to update the driver as usual and it would work without any errors.

I'll watch your reply!

Take Care! 🙂

HP Officejet Pro 8610 working fine wireless and wired for two, three years.  Updated to Windows 10 Creator and ran into BSOD over and over could not get to Windows OS to attemt repair so had to do a RESET ugh,  That means I had to start over with adding the HP8610 driver on my desktop.  Still works fine on my laptop but after hours of the printer screen shwoing "connected" and the IP Address and the update software finding the HP8610 intstantly and even shows me the ink levels.  But the Device list showing the 8610 has "Driver is unavailable".

I just now found your post and like the last two sentences that read "This may take a while but will fix the issue for your device.  You can then retry to update the driver as usual and it would work without any errors."  Even though I have a HP OJP 8610  HP4C60CA and Dell XPS i7 Windows 10 Home Edition Version 1703 OS Build 15063.413

Just got message Windows has successfully updated my drivers HP PCL3 A-size driver.  I will look see if "driver  missing" still there.   Now the printer has note under it "app available for this device".  That is  a good sign.  I opened a word doc and there is the printer HP 8610 and printed one MS Word page perfectly with the HP Smart App but I need to the full featured which I hope wil work.  At least I can do some work now.  It just took me four hours to find  your post.  I had to finally get the NT-4 message which took over three hours.  Maybe was six.  I been on this since noon and now is 9:15 PM.  THANK YOU AND YOUR WERE CORRECT. IT DOES WORK.

Hi MrRobot,

Non of the efforts I tried was successful, not even your advice.  I had to take it to a technician who eventually after a few hours resolved the problem.  As usual (you know technicians HaHa) he didn't want to explain what he did and in any case, I wouldn't understand.  No blame on your side anyway, and thank you for answering my plight.  It just happened that this problem was way over my head.

Regards.

PS:  Since the driver loaded I was able to install the Full Feature printing/scanning software and it works fine.  Kudos to Mr. Robot for his instructions.  Actully I didn't think it would work since all the other instructions I found on the Internet I followed and didn't work.  Once I got to this thread on the HP Forum I read all the instructions.  When I got to the last set of instructions that simply read somewhere in the last sentence "it will work" I didn't really think it would work but IT DID WORK. That is all that counts.
