HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer

When I try to print it tells me the cartridge cannot be used until the printer is enrolled in hp instant ink. Do I need to sign up for instant ink to use the printer or is it just telling me it’s out of ink?

Hi @DK2233,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The message you're seeing about the cartridge not being usable until the printer is enrolled in HP Instant Ink indicates that the cartridge installed is an HP Instant Ink cartridge. These cartridges are special and only function if the printer is enrolled in the HP Instant Ink subscription service. Here’s what you need to know.

  • HP Instant Ink Cartridges: These are provided as part of the HP Instant Ink subscription service. They are different from regular cartridges and will not work unless the printer is enrolled in the program.
  • Enrollment in HP Instant Ink: If you want to use the Instant Ink cartridges that came with your printer, you must sign up for the HP Instant Ink service. This is a monthly subscription where HP monitors your ink usage and sends you new cartridges before you run out.
  • Using Standard Cartridges: If you do not wish to enroll in HP Instant Ink, you can purchase regular HP ink cartridges (not the Instant Ink type) and install them in your printer. These will work without needing to sign up for any service.

Steps to Resolve the Issue:

Option 1: Enroll in HP Instant Ink

  • Visit the HP Instant Ink website, follow the prompts to sign up, and enroll your printer.
  • Once enrolled, your Instant Ink cartridges should work.

Option 2: Use Standard Cartridges

  • Purchase standard HP ink cartridges that are compatible with the HP ENVY 7640 (e.g., HP 62 or HP 62XL cartridges).
  • Remove the Instant Ink cartridges and install the standard ones.

Additional Tips:

  • Ensure your printer firmware is up-to-date by checking for updates via the HP Smart app or the printer’s control panel.
  • If you have previously enrolled in HP Instant Ink but no longer want the service, you need to cancel the subscription via your HP account and then use standard cartridges.

By choosing one of these options, you should be able to resolve the cartridge issue and continue printing.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
