HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e Wide Format All-in-One Printer

I get an "Invalid credentials" message during the test of Email Server.
I set up the correct user name and created an App password from Microsoft which is what I used as password.

SMTP server name is smtp.office365.com, port 587, secure connection, authentication required.

I used the username with both the account password and later with the app password. It fails in both cases.

Hi @Ljprojects,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e is showing an “Invalid credentials” error when testing the email server, even after using your Microsoft account credentials and app password. Let’s go through some steps to troubleshoot this.

Verify App Password

Make sure the app password you created in your Microsoft account is active and correctly entered.

Copy and paste the app password carefully to avoid typos.

Check Username Format

For Office 365, the username should usually be your full email address (e.g., youremail@domain.com).

SMTP Settings

Ensure the following settings are correct:

SMTP server: smtp.office365.com

Port: 587

Encryption: STARTTLS or TLS

Authentication: Required (use your full email and app password)

Enable SMTP Authentication

Confirm that SMTP authentication is enabled in your Microsoft 365 account settings.

Some accounts have modern authentication enabled, which may require app-specific passwords.

Check Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

If MFA is enabled on your Microsoft account, you must use the app password, not your regular account password.

Firmware Update

Ensure your printer has the latest firmware installed. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause authentication failures with modern email servers.

Try a Test Account

If possible, try configuring a different Microsoft account with app password to determine if the issue is account-specific.

Contact Microsoft Support

If the error persists, check with Microsoft 365 support to confirm that SMTP is enabled and app passwords are allowed for your account type.

I hope this helps.
