HP Photosmart C4780 All-in-One Printer

I have an old HP Photosmart C4700 series printer that I have been unable to successfully connect to my new MacBook Air laptop.  The printer is connected to my home WiFi network and has appeared on the list of printers in the Mac, but whenever I try to print a document I get an error message saying "Filter failed, Page 1".  This happens even when I connect the printer to the Mac directly with a USB cable.   I should add that I still have my 2009 MacBook Pro that still recognizes the HP printer and still works in printing documents using the old HP printer on my home Wi Fi network.

Is the old HP printer simply so old that its programming is incompatible with that of the new MacBook Air?  Or is there something that needs to be corrected to successfully connect the HP printer to the Mac so that it actually works?
