Short Answer

Try -- Consider

Universal Scan Software

NOTES >>

  • The Universal Scan Software is both printer model and Operating System / version dependent.
  • When installed on a supported system, the Universal Scan Software might -- or might not -- include "Save as Editable Text (OCR)".
  • Whether the HP Scan software includes the HP Scan > Shortcut for "Save as Editable Text (OCR)" is impacted by whether the printer is eligible for full  HP+ services.

Simply Said --

If, after installing HP Universal Scan software, you do not see the OCR option, it is not available.

HP Document

HP printers - Scan as Editable Text (OCR) with HP Scan (Windows)

HP Universal Scan Software

Printer Model and Operating System version Dependent >>

HP Universal Scan Software installs a new, full featured, (and separate) HP Scan software shortcut to the Desktop. Note:

Where supported, HPUSS can be installed as standalone or installed after the full feature / full solution printer software.

HP Universal Scan Software might add OCR libraries to installed HP Scan software.

Open website  HP Universal Scan Full Feature Software

If needful, choose a different OS > Open all

Find / Download / Save / Install HP Universal Scan – Full Feature Software and Driver Webpack

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and sign in.

What else?

What if?

A while ago (two years??), many of the printers that at one time offered an embedded OCR feature were updated to remove that option.  No, we were not told why, though the change might have been due to licensing or compatibility issues.  ?

Other printers (withing this general time frame) might have never offered the embedded OCR the option.

Your printer, when it was introduced, came with the option to enable "HP+" service / contract --

  • HP+ adds an extra year to the (then available) original printer Warranty
  • HP+ adds premium features to the HP Smart application.
  • HP+ changes the HP Smart menu to "Orange" to differentiate the HP Smart HP+ menu from the original HP Smart menu.

One of these premium features:

Scan / Save to Cloud as  "Searchable PDF" - a form of OCR software.

What about now?

Not sure --

Certainly the printer is (by now) out of Warranty --

There is no way to "extend" or change an expired Warranty.

Can HP+ be enabled on the printer after this much time?

Unknown.

Too, even were it possible to enable HP+, doing so includes other changes that impact how you use the printer.

Read, decide.

IF interested, then perhaps try to enable HP+

Reminder -- Disregard any mention of extending the Warranty

Requirements for HP+ printers

This topic describes the requirements for HP+ printers.

Keep the printer connected to the Internet

HP+ printers are cloud-connected devices that must remain connected to the Internet in order to function. The
Internet connection enables the printer to deliver HP+ specific app features and firmware updates.

During setup, you must connect the printer to the Internet using a supported network connection. After setup, you can print using a USB cable connection, if desired, but the printer must still be connected to the Internet.

Use Original HP cartridges

Original HP cartridges are cartridges manufactured and sold by HP in official HP packaging. If non-Original HP
supplies or refilled cartridges are installed, HP+ printers will not operate as expected.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Reminder

An HP Instant Ink subscription is not required as part of the HP+ setup or HP+ service.
